That is exactly the right move? when i got my fg rtr i stripped it down to the chassis? my hpi iv done the same? afterwards you have a mental exploded view of you new rig and know exactly what to do when something goes south? i would highly recommend any new 1/5 owner to do this and while you there put thread loc?I use to be into 1/8 and 1/10 scales. now im in 1/8 scale, now im in 1/5, everytime I get a car or truck, new or used, the first thing I do is take it completely apart and see whats what. How it works and so on, I have no hobby store here to rely on and if i did i would probably work there.
Thank you, Thrasher. You're a credit to rc-ers everywhere!I wasnt really into RC'ing. I just knew people who were but since they are all 'mah srz bznz liek', I just thought of it as those looney overpriced toy cars they were taking to those meetings of theirs. As I was looking for a new hobby I feel over botajells MTXL videos by accident and thought, "that does kind of look like fun and it doesn't cost 3000 bucks without an engine or electrics". Thats right, I thought the MTXL was cheap because RC's was either those small toy cars or those insanely expensive metal ones with weedwhacker engines. So I got one and nearly fell over when I got the box. The guy who delivered it (my hobby shop does personal deliveries!) could not stop laughing at me. Made a friend who happens to also be one of those crazy people but I digress. The thing was/is motherloving huge. In the videos I thought it looked like 1:8 scale or thereabouts.
There I was, with a litteral monstertruck in my living room and no idea what to do with it. The most I have screwed in was the odd broken moped or lawnmower so I was not exactly a technical tour de force. I got it out and....I broke it. Within 3 minutes, no less. I called my new friend and told him he had sold me a POS. He came over (my hobby shop will send people over!) and moved his hands in arcane ways and presto... it was unbroke. He told me to upgrade a few parts. I now knew about 'hopups'. I took it out and...I broke it again. My new friend came over again and changed a single thing and said "clearly you suck at this, so no more free replacement parts. You need these tools, tool".
Tools get! I took out my truck and it went really well for 10 minutes. Then I broke it. And this time I was too ashamed to even call him so I had to figure poop out. I am still figuring poop out but have gotten a lot better at it. And my flakey friends think its cool to know a bonafide 'basher' because we see everything from a different angle from the 'racers' who are notorious snobs. Suddenly I seemed to attract people from within the hobby and got other people hooked on it too so now I have a pretty solid network of knowledge to draw upon and I have come to love being under the hood of my 1:5's and my beloved losi LST2's which came later, to appease the neighbours. Converted to electricity by me for the same reason.
And I just ran into a 2 stroke engine specialist who is interrested in getting into large scale. I hope he does. He used to mechanic racing bikes and racing trail bikes and really knows his way around engines. With a particular fondness for 2 strokes. I have given him permit to mess about with the MTXL and I hope to pick up tricks from him. Its a great hobby, this.
