DBXL Axle boots

How important are the axle boots on my DBXL? First tank of gas and all 4 rear were ripped. 2 of them completely off and ripped in half. There wasn't even any grease. I have new boots and some grease. Just wondering if there really that important. If there going to rip all the time whats the point? This was running on flat gravel going pretty slow breaking the motor in.

Mine were gone after the second run. That was 2 months ago. Going strong no boots.
