B/C gear removal

Is there a trick to removing the b/c gears? When I turn the nut the whole shaft moves. Do I simply just hold the shaft at the back with pliers to remove the nut? Or am I missing something blatantly obvious?

If you use an 8mm open end wrench to hold the back side, it wiil come off.

use a 5/16 open end wrench to hold it
