The 5000 will be a tight fit. The 4600 would be a better fit. The white plug is a charge plug, but you can charge through either end. I would leave the white plug on there, in case you ever need to charge from it.
 
This is how I have my 5000 nmh mounted to many wires in box for it to fit there.it fits nice and tight like this

For the first few cycles I wouldn't charge at over 1.5A. You can charge up to 5A, but I generally stay with slow charging. They'll be better off in the long run. They'll take more abuse than LiPo's, but not much more. You can run them until they're completely dead without any issues.
