it would help but so would not tightening your spring collar all the way down. i did this on my stock xt shock which bent & then snapped. i had the collar all the way down as well. i've also seen this on atv shocks where the springs were tightened all the way. the spring gets a kink/bind in it & it doesn't put equal pressure around the collar & shaft anymore. being vertical would help but my personal issue is that vertical shocks actuate a lot less than ones that are leaned over. what would be good are longer shocks. this is why i like putting the mt rears on the front suspension.
 
Ya Backed them off a bit, guess Ill see what happens. Shock shafts are cheap. Lol
 
Well, if you do plan on bending one again, get it on video. I would love to see what kind of landing does that to a shock. :D
 
Ya it was bizarre. I just run my truck on a dirtbike track I have in my yard. One jump I made is over an old suburban. I may have over shot the landing but couldnt tell as I was on the take off side of the jump. After doing a lap is when I noticed the truck sitting awkward. Not sure which jump bent it, but I would guess it was the suburban jump.
