Hi

Had Marder set up with front cable brakes and layshaft brake for some time now and all is good. Recently obtained rear cable brakes including additional servo. When mounting these to the car should I remove the layshaft brake and just have the disks all round or should I try to incorporate the layshaft brake too. Any ideas on suitable mounting place for receiver box once additional servo is installed, starting to get a bit of a tight squeeze with all the gizmos in there.

Sadly i have no option but to run my Leopard 2 as it came out of the box with hydros all round. There is a conversion to a lay shaft brake out soon which I will be changing to.
On an off road car I wouldn't, (given the option) run anything other than front brakes and a rear layshaft brake because of the amount of crap kicked up into the back wheel area that jams the pads up but on the layshaft brake it's nowhere near as noticeable or problematic. After every practice and most of the heats/final last sunday, my back brakes had or were almost jammed up.

My choice would be

Front hyraulic brakes mecatek or magura run by a futaba s9351 servo
rear brake on the layshaft, either hydraulic or rod operated which is again run by a futaba s9351 servo.

Sounds like very good advice from Mike!!
By coincidence, not experience that's what I'm running on my MT and it's fine!!
Crap around the rear wheels is quite a lot, so totally agree in theory with not using rear discs.

i just fitted this for my layshaft:

gutta say that it feels much more beefier than the stock one i had, & theres no play in it at all, disc is nice & thick & vented & the pads are quality. Also the hub is thicker & wider.

Not been out with my beetle yet since fitting it, but ive tested it turning wheels by hand & it seems to be a massive improvement from the stock :)

Where you get that from Daz? What is the part no mate? My layshaft brake is shite so could do with replacing it!

then you need that also (20 euro). Postage is fast, usually 2-3 days from germany :)

i haven't actually tried it out yet, but like you my stock layshaft was a waste of space, hardly worked, with this setup ive tried it by hand & it seems to work great, the parts fit solid (no gaps or wobble like with the stock) so hopefully will work a treat! :)

not too sure dude :s ?

is the 4wd layshaft brake same as the 2WD? if so then it will fit, its a straight swap pretty much, nothing is bigger or smaller (except for the barke disc holder which is beefed up so no more slippage), i fitted an alloy gear plate too @ same time :)
 
FG part no is 8449 for anyone interested ;) I just bought myself 1 today £30 from Ross Mods :D
