While I wait for my new Rhino steering servos, I'm pretty much stuck in dry dock. Since I can't run it, thought I would install my axle boots. Well, took out all four of the CVDs. When I took out the left front, I noticed the pin in the end on the dogbone was broken... On one side there was a pin, on the other side there was only the hole. I drove out the rest of the pin and it looks like it snapped right at the set screw.

I make chain maille (I want to make a set of snow chains when I get a chance), so I have a bunch of hardened steel mandrels of variour diameters that I use to coil wire. I had one that was the right size, so I cut a piece from it and made a replacement pin.

I ran it for about 15 the other day before I stripped my steering. Either it broke after 15 minutes of light running (save one ditch dive) or it was like that from the get-go.

Has anyone else had a pin like that snap? I've got retaining sleeves and boots on all the diff cups now, so if another does it, I'll at least have all the pieces...

make a few extra pins up and get some green loktite. if you look at the broken pin you'll see the metal fatigure. it is too hard so it's a bit brittle. pretty common but an easy fix. also make sure you have some limiting straps. the pins can bind with extension at full droop adding to failure

So...checked on my new homemade dogbone pin the other day after running the truck for about an hour or so... it was worn down on each end on the bearing edge. The pin was almost hlaf as thick as it started and the diff cup boots were full of metal dust. Will post pics as soon as I get a camera handy... for the time being, here's a rough sketch...

So I figure that the steel just wasn't as hardened as I thought. I found a 4mm drill bit, and thinking that drill bits are pretty hard, I cut a pin from the end of it and voila, I'm back in business.

Well, after another hour or so of running, I check on the new drill bit pin. Same old song and dance, my friend... Now I'm thinking that after 15 minutes or so or running with half of the first dogbone pin, the diff cup has a small burr or something that is just chewing up my pins. I've got some of these ordered... http://www.davesmotors.com/s.nl/c.885035/n.1/it.A/id.7142/.f If the Ramp chews on of these up, I'll know it's the diff cup.

Mine doesn't have the set screw that holds the pin in. When theyre worn theyre worn..........but they are not experiencing any wear after at least 25 tanks. I wonder if the version with the removaeable pin is softer. You can buy a different brand of dogbone. I think it was FS and theres a few others. Just get the right lenght.

I've got the universal drive joints all the way around, so I'd rather just replace the pin. The other three are fine, no sign of any kind of wear. That's what makes me think that the diff cup in question might have some burrs on it since I ran for about 15 minutes with half a dogbone pin in it when I first got the Ramp. If the new FLM pins wear like this, I'll just chuck a new diff cup in and forget it...

Already had the diff cup sleeves on it before I noticed that I was eating up pins, so I can't really see up in it to tell if there is an issue with the cup or not.
