I'm thinking the castor 927 oil is the reason my xt will not crank. I pulled the spark plug and turned it upside down, pulled the starter cord several times and lots of black gunk came out of the spark plug hole. Also stood the truck up and lots of black liquid gunk was inside the jetpro pipe and cannot get out unless tipped straight up. Spark plug was completely black from this gunk, cleaned it and it still will not crank. Guessing I would say the motor has 30-40 hours on it, not very old yet. Does anyone know if the castor oil could have ruined some rings or anything? Sounds like it still has compression when I try to start it. Is there a trick to find out if something is wrong with my piston? All the black liquid gunk has got me. Any and all is greatly appreciated. View attachment 7865

castor oil

its doubtful that there is anything wrong with your engine. all castor oils will do this when the engines been ran on the rich side. chances are-- your engine has been ran so rich -- theres no doubt zero wear. the junk you see is thicker and more sticky than other types of oils. me even bringing up the subject or the "best" oil is opening a can -o- worms. if you do choose to try another brand of oil, its best to stay away from the really cheap price stuff.

25-1 mix? Like what was said, could be loosening up old crap that was in the motor.

Sounds like it got flooded.

Clean air filter, go back to stock carb setting and retune.

Castor doesn't smoke as much as regular oil, so you may need to lean it a little more.

high speed needle adjustment.

if your r-c has a kill switch-- and it should!! do this. leave the body off. find a open safe place to run the the car wide open-- full throttle. do this for about 5 or 10 seconds if you have the room. do not let off the throttle-- hit the kill switch. kill the spark. pull out the spark plug. look closely at the center porlecan area in the plug. you want the color in this area to be about the color of a brown paper bag. if the color is black, its too rich- turn the high speed screw clockwise. if the color is white, its not getting enough gas. this color can seize - lock up the piston in the cyclinder. agan, if the plug is white-- turn the hsn counter clockwise. to add more gas to the engine. agan-- when you do the wide open - hit the kill switch, do NOT let off the throttle. if you let off the throttle-- you will get a false color reading on the plug. and agan--- adjust the hsn so the center polercian of the plug has color of a common paper shopping bag. once you achive this color-- listen to the sound of the engine-- it will have a razzy tone. somewhat louder also. alfred and his mooching wolf dog told you all this trick.

if the plug is white-- turn the hsn screw COUNTER clockwise. this gives the engine MORE gas. too dammed early here- not enough coffee yet.---- alfred

plug color

If you go on the www looking at spark plug colors--- beware. about half the time the spark plug colors you see are plugs removed fron 4 cycle engines. this is useless to even look at and will seize up your motor. like i said before-- adjust the carbs high speed fuel screw to achive a light brown paper bag color. just saying-----

christ sakes-- i do post too much. when you see posts here saying rich--- or lean. there people have been running these engines-- into the r-c hobby quite a long time. they are actually going by the response and sound of there engines as they adjust the carb. for all you new guys-- learning to take spark plug color readings is a quicker safe way to learn. just my humble opinion-----

only problem with tuning by sound is when you're adding a tuned exhaust :) Buh-bye engine sound lol. Now, regarding killing the engine while at WOT... I've done it a couple of times and EVERY TIME I had a hell of a time starting the engine after that. I don't know if this happens to everybody, but my engine DOES NOT like that procedure. Also, I noticed that other people here (e.g. Rob) consider this method too brutal.

tuning by ear is best used by people with years of practice. on any motor taking plug readings is sound practice. used world wide. On a small 2 cycle engine, opon attempted re start, just told the throttile wide open, same as you would on any non- fuel injected engine. i can see what you are saying though-- if you do this when its super cold outside, it could be somewhat rough on the cylender plating. spelling--oops. as for looking at the plug color, watch the pro racers- isle of mann bike tuners- f-1 cars- they use a magnafiying glass-- the plugs have a story to tell the tuners.

actually, one of the most brutal things that are commonly done to engines-- its reving a cold engine. this causes what is called a 4 point piston seizure. around 4 areas where the piston pin is located on both sides of the piston-- it actually should be called 8 point piston seizure.

warm up folks ! definitely underrated and under used. sound and response requires experience and practice but easier for sure.

the WOT hot kill...if KNOW the current humidity, temperature, exact elevation AND what the roasted esters look like...its ideal! and the hair splitting detail sometimes best left to F1 /IOM professional where winning is their life...for the rest.. stable well fed unbroken scream will have to do.
