completely new, what to expect??!?

im completely new to 1/5 scale, iv owned many nitros, but have decided to move up to 1/5 scale! im considering the xt and xb right now, im just curious what to expect, as in common "problems".. or in other words "this part" always breaks, so get "this" to replace it, or maybe a defect in design??! im trying to think of the best way to word it, i am not a hard basher or abuse any of my toys, i really like just messing around.. iv read that these motors suck up grass and debris alot, is that a major concern at all or is here a quick fix to that? im just afraid i will spend $600+ and end up finding out the hard way that there is alot more to 1/5 scale than i think... thanks to you all for any advice!
 
Ok the foams wear out really fast on the stock x series tires,so wheel adapters and you can choose many options of hpi tires and wheels.A steering servo,the window screen and a little shoe glue mod for the case behind the flywheel takes care of the grass problem. And a pipe.1/5th is expensive and you must get used to it.But the fun factor is priceless.What ever you choose your going to put money into your 1/5th no matter what brand you choose. That being said ,drop a little coin and have some fun.

Which vehicle are you getting? That'll help narrow down some of the recommendations. You'll need these upgrades, regardless of what you choose to run.

1. Kill switch

2. Throttle servo

3. RX battery

4. Air filter with an Outerwears pre-filter

5. Vent the fuel tank ( Not an upgrade, but a necessary mod )
 
The fact of the matter is that 5th scale is big bucks compared to 8th or 10th. The great thing about the Redcats is that you are starting off ahead of the game since the platform is relatively inexpensive. That leaves more room for hopups. Almost everyone that runs 5th scale that used to run nitros never look back. That includes me. I have no interest in the little cars anymore. There are only a few things needing upgrading right out of the box. The rest you can do as you go along, or should I say, as you want to get faster. :)
 
Not necessarily, the Redcat line is MUCH, MUCH cheaper than FG or, Gulp, MCD!

You can get a Redcat for $489 shipped that's less than the price of a new .32 Savage and the parts are not that expensive. Everything on an Xb is about the same price as nitro vehicles, think shock towers, drive shafts, diff gears, etc... Redcat has made large scale affordable and it makes me tingle to think about it!

My FG was $1,200 when I bought it and it still needed a motor ($300) radio gear and 1/4 scale servos ($300)

The Redcats come with a decent motor, bad radio gear, but a great price tag, plus it's 4wd! You can't get anything else 4wd for less than the above prices (or more) unless it's a Redcat...

Radio gear performs great. Never had any problems with them and my sons still use them. They are plain Jane with no bells and whistles. They have great range and are 2.4ghz. The receiver they come with is the flysky 3ch receiver. So if a persons upgrades to the GT3B it is possible to re-bind it.

That's what attracted me to Redcat in the first place. Once you get one, you then realize what a great platform it is to work on. They are laid out nice and easy to work on compaired to other platforms.

I gotcha. You are correct. The servos will need to be replaced, and the throttle servo sooner than later. I've got some good use out of my steering servos. They are still sluggish though.
 
1: Replace all the stock servo's with better servo's. Hitec, Futaba etc...are some of the good ones. Hopefully, before you find out the hard way the're junk.

2: Get a kill switch, even if it's the 1st thing you get and have to save for the servo's it will save you from having to rebuild your truck because the throttle servo died and it went full throttle into a cement curb, wall etc... :eek:

3: This is more for performance, but get a tuned exhaust. CPI, Jetpro and DDM are a few of themanufacturers that build them.

Locktite all your metal to metal screws. I also Locktite all the screws on the bottom, the big gearplate bolts, and the screws on the top of the center gearbox/brakes. then you...... go play:D
