Tightening and checking bolts on new vehicle so I was wondering, does anyone know the actual torque specifications for the cooling head bolts? Thanks.

Hmmm - lowest I can get my torque wrench to go down to is about 8 ft lbs / 96 in lbs - is that too much? How do you guys get this torque down right? I don't want to blow another gasket :(

i found a 1/4in. drive torque wrench at harbor frieght. it works really well. i don't use it anymore though, well... some times. most of the time i just tighten the bolts with a zen wrench. i tighten them damn tight but not stupid tight, if you know what i mean. you have to take into account what gasket material you are using. some gaskets have more crush, if you over tighten a gasket that has a lot of crush you will crack the head once the engine is running and heat and stress enter the picture.

96 in. lbs. is way to much torque. don't do that, lol.

if you go with a copper gasket just tighten the hell out of them and that will be good, the copper has no crush factor.

These are inch readings NOT lb readings, so you need NOT to over torque the head bolts. You really need to purchase and or use a torque wrench that is in inch calibration.

I think you can also use a torque wrench/screwdriver that is found at gun supply places that gunsmiths use.
