This has probably been done before but thought I would post it anyway !
Ive just started using a ProLine Desert Rat shell on my Baja SS, which I MUCH prefer over the stock HPI shell. And after fitting the side pods, noticed a possibility for a little mod.
The side pods have a flat front section (unlike the HPI "grass-catchers"!) which helps keep a bit of crap out of the pods. But if you look at the pic, I cut to shape a piece of CLEAR lexan (off-cuts from the shell) and attached it inside the front of the pod with two zip ties , so that it mates right up to the side of the chassis (and up inside the body too). This keeps a WHOLE LOT more grass / leaves / twigs etc etc out of the pods and away from the pull start etc.
I was quite pleased with the result, so just thought I would share this !!!DesertRatPodMod.webp

Nice mod. I saw the picture before reading what you said and i didn't even notice the clear lexan. That is very cool..

if you buy stock HPI bottom pods, they actuall come with enough area to cut to shape around the frame like you have done. BUT after my lower plastic protector plate keeps getting pulled off, ijust don't run with them at all.

Nice pod mod there It will keep the dirt out, just want to let some air in there.

Yeh i thought about that. But I reckon there is enough space above , below and behind the pull start unit for the air to get in. It was just that front face of it that was getting so covered with grass / mud that it was suffocating real bad !!!

I agree, the standard hpi design is plain stupid! I reckon the potential build-up when running on newly mown grass could even become a fire hazard.
