Mine too...

I am so sick of this gear sliding off, I thought I had to take more drastic measures. I have tried red and blue loctite, I bought new Allen drivers and so far I haven't been able to find a better way to lock this gear in place. So I welded it! It ain't comin off now!! Or ever!

I figured why not? The shaft is only 8 bucks from Tower.

What do you guys think?

did you file the bottom of the grub screw flat? you could even drill an indent in the layshaft. but ya, ordering a new layshaft with a gear is cheap enough. I've had my share or ripped up gears too.

I also find that when I had the rear brake kit on the wheels, I had less problems with the layshaft gear. so I am putting a rear brake kit back on the semi. braking on pavement I guess heats things up more?

Nope never had a problem. Quite the opposite in fact. When my engine mounts moved & stripped the teeth on the layshaft gear could I get the buggar off......not a chance. Ended up drifting the gear off the shaft with a BFH :hammer: When I put the new gear on I forgot to loctite the grub screws & it came off within 10mins of running so back on it went with loctite & its been good again since :)

You need to invest in a TIG set :cool2: A small set for doing jobs on RC's is between £100 & £150 over here.

I forgot to mention, this is from Meli's Mutilator.

All 3 grub screws had flat spots on the ends, but the shaft has so many marks I wouldn't know where to dimple it. This gear has fallen off about 15-18 times. The problem was the layshaft bearings were smoked. I bought a complete set from Boca for 8 bucks!!

I think she is good to go now!

my gear has come off once, used a bit of red loctite and never happened since, run about 15 litres through it since then.

I actually have a problem of that gear wearing out but ill be putting a new post on that shortly.

i've had alot of trouble with that gear. actually my whole rearend gets alot of stress on it. i've got a fhammer mt that i made a new chassy about 4"s longer and i'm running the rampage mt tires on it with a 28.5 race ported motor in it. i made a home made pipe that seems to give me great bottom and midrange power and it tears up the ground. but it tears up the drive train also. good thing that the fhammer parts are cheap.

Welding it will definately stop it coming off......but maybe just a couple of tack welds would have been better.....that much weld would have created a lot of heat.....would have been very close to fookin up the case hardening......

Let us know how it holds up in regards to wear....

Great idea on the welding. Although mine never came off, if that ever happens, I will weld it for sure. Way to think outside the box.

You're right there bud. Thats where a TIG set comes into its own. You can control the heat and it is more localised for doing nice neat tacks :cool2:

if you think fg bits are pricey you should look at some of the mcd alloy just ask wagon alloy arms upper and lower all round over £500 cheers then

This is a HobbyPro Mutilator layshaft gear... There is no hardening in the gears! I blasted that weld on there while I was holding the shaft with an un-gloved hand. Total weld time 2 maybe 3 seconds.

I am a tool and die maker by trade, so I am pretty good with a welder  I have to be to fix everyone's mistakes

That's just one more thing on my list of needed items for my garage. I also want to get a bench top buffer for polishing side plates!
