OK, Engine was running fine 2 days ago. Went to start it tonight and it started after the standard 2-5 pulls but it cut out after like 2-3 seconds....I have no other info to report. Gas is fresh, Changed the spark plug...won't start any ideas, so new to Gassers...I'll try setting factory carb tomorrow but it's not far off and the plug I pulled was almost brown bag...so it's prolly good...no sound change in the cranking either...

Try resetting carb to factory, if it doesn't help then you have air leak.

1. Check if head is bolted up

2. Take top of the engine apart and check if there are scratches on the piston or cylinder.

I had exactly same problem two times. First one was solved by bolting up the head, second was solved by replacing the head kit (cylinder, piston)

Hope that helps and lets hope that engine head was unbolted that caused air leak.

Hey krash did you check to make sure the head bolts were tight? If they are loose and there is enough of an air leak it probably wouldnt start...........EDIT: Guess I typed it too slow...lol

Besides the obvious, airleaks, reset carb, check idle screw, clean filter, new plug, make sure its gettin fuel, not floodedand checking for spark. Etc Etc etc. If nothing else works, try puttin a few drops of 2 cycle oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole. Then try starting it. The oil will help create a seal in the cylinder and give you enough compression to get her fired.

don't pull the head off until you have tried every other possible alternative, because in doing so you can create even more problems. As always tearing a motor down should be a last resort.

Thanks everyone for the quick reply's...

I just woke up and I'm going to check all this out...

OBeast, if I have to pull the head off, I'm rebuilding the whole thing with new 30.5 ported / stuffed head kit that just got delivered yesterday.... :D

I'd tear it down anyways, seems like a perfect time for a rebuild. :D

hey krash, sorry my dumb tip but. what about the vent in the tank cap?
Never a dumb tip all help is welcome, I'll check that out too...bought an extra filter while ago in case I need to do the cap mod....

Pull your plug, gournd it and check for spark too. My guess right off from what you described woul be a simple head gasket. Check your killswitch if you have one. Ive tried to start an engine not realizing last time I used it my 3rd channel switch is still in the off position! don't laugh at me!

Also there is simple way to check for air leak. Simply pull the pull-start, and if it pulls easier than before then possibly you have air leak. Or go old school method and put some paper towel in spark plug and pull the pull-start. It works but only with bigger air leaks.

Started and running OK! Thanks to all...

I tightened both head bolts literally a 1/32 "...Both of the bolts went "CLICK" when I torqued down on them with my ball tip BONDHUS

4mm driver....These f'n rule....can't break 'em

The 2mm handle on the 1.5 to 5mm kit is too small for my big bony hands but you can't beat the price vs quality..

Thanks Hamster, Didn't need it, but when I do, how do I check for spark once I grounded it?....not the same as checking a glow plug...lol

Nice to hear that everything works. Btw might wanna use threadlocker (locktight) just in case

Put your finger on the electrode and pull the pull start. Let us know the results.

...Or buy a Briggs and Stratton spark tester.

Ive done he finger test too! The easy way is with the plug removed plug it into the plug wire, then touch the plug tip to gorund (head). Pull the pullstart. You should see sparks.

Be careful doing this if there is unburned fuel in the cylinder because it will go FFOOOMPGH flame staright up if the spark is close enough as you pull the starter and the engine spins. Ive done that as well! Sounds scary but more cool and dangerous than scary. Shocking yourself isnt as bad as youd imagine either.

Thanks, are you saying that cause im gonna get sparked?...lol...I can touch the end of a 110v line willingly so this plug ain't gonna be that bad....hair standing on end is a cool look..

Thanks again Hamster I'll try both ways but wait to try Deluges' way when I haven't had my coffee yet.
