I found the 990 no better than the 668
What is supposed to make the big difference other than no choke?

No big difference. As you stated before the choke is the only difference.
 
In my experience,

668
- choke
- smooth after the initial lag
- average ok reaction to throttle input throughout the power band
- very friendly and forgiving when tuning

990
- no choke
- no initial lag
- quick reaction to throttle input throughout the power band
- Sensitive carb needle setting (require smaller increments than 668) when tuning

Perso 990 over 668 any day. It's simply more peppy and starting without a choke only requires 3-4 slow pull before regular pull.

For those who wants a 990 like carb with a choke get a 1107.

At the end of the day, a good tune with any carb is all that matters.

1107 is too big for anything under 32cc
Just floods smaller motors and you can't tune it lean enough
At least that is my experience on a G290

In my experience 990 makes the hobby a pain
668 makes it a pleasure

I have a 1107 on my MT with the original 30cc engine and exhaust pro and it works fine.
On the other hand, it consumes a little more fuel.

No way could I get it to run on the 290
Just kept bogging no matter how lean I set it.
I've put it aside for when I get my 5B and a G320
