I bought the Rampage XT for my grandson for his birthday. Since the purchase I have had to replace the steering servo after only running the car for a total of 5 minutes. Well then I decided to put a remote kill switch on it. The first one that I received would not turn the car off. So I was sent another and it worked like it should. Finally get the car up and running for the first real play day and the steering servo gets to where it will barely turn the wheels. We played with it for a total time of 15 minutes. I am ready to sell this thing and move on to something else. Total frustration. Is the steering servo bad or is the battery going down?
 
Sorry to here that & yes RC can be very frustrating. I think it's worth noting that RC is a HOBBY & thus there is a learning curve. A very steep learning curve for some, and a very VERY steep learning curve for someone with little experience starting the hobby with 5th scale. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you want a hiccup free experience with your grandson maybe try a more proven platform like this http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCYCB&P=ML

or maybe try rocketry.
 
Big ice, do you realize you sent him to a nitro truck?

As far as the steering servo, Redcat May warranty it. Your dealer should have given you a talk about servos. Redcat is getting better on the servos, but still has a little way to go.

For the kill switch, I have it now and it's working normally for me. I need to check range tomorrow.

It is not a nitro truck. For the record I am a big fan of the redcat 5th & believe them to be a great value....but they are not for everybody.

Did you check the "servo saver"?

It's the silver knurled nut on the steering linkage.

If it's loose it will cause poor steering.

Thanks for the tips. I will look at it when I get back in the garage. The battery may be going down also. I will take a look at both.
 
mainstreaming 1/5th scale with a warranty....funny.

you and your grandson can dismantle it together! its part of the fun! gotta love the tedium and the process..

gonna need some details to help you get it rolling.

You know the frustrating thing about these cars is that there is no manuals of ANY kind! If I would not have found this forum, I would be in deep trouble. I love tinkering with things and these little cars are fun but the lack of understanding is frustrating. I will keep the car and when I am fed up, I will put it on the shelf and move to something more interesting.
 
even for experienced hobbyist, an assembled kit delivered is handicapping, it even takes the fun out it! they have decent diagrams way more than i expected since it was RTR, a decent manual with funny englidish quwriting may be even more frustrating. good luck with it. tip of the day....blue loctite! apply as needed

Thanks for the tip but I use Red Loctite on all metal to metal screws. LOL
 
I would dump the Redcat steering servo ASAP! Dgi racing sells the Xq 5040 will run 6.2v or 7.2 volt. I didn't wait for mine to go. I also suggest a green bearing kit from boca bearings. And either Redcat bearing carriers on all four corners or 7075rc. Next will be the gear plate. Again Redcat sells an aluminum upgrade or 7075rc sells one. Next get a jetpro rear mount pipe to get the heat out from under the body and you'll get lots of power. If you do these upgrades you'll be happy. I've run 5 gallons through my XT with those up grades. And just now having differential problems, but I beat my truck to death!

Thanks, I know the basics are there. The motor seems to be pretty solid, its the electronics that are junk. I will keep the little truck and play with it. I will upgrade the electronics.
 
Don't give up, its a very rewarding hobby. I can't say I like working on my truck as much as some of the guys, but its a must. It's your grandson? He'll get a lesson in the rewards of time spent. And there's something about ups boxes that have hop up parts in them that strangely gives me joy when I come home to them. Weird I know. Good Luck!
 
I have collected a few stock servos for this series of r-c-s.If you want, send them to me via usps. I will open them up and see if i can repair, send back to you. If nothing else, you will have spares- just in case of another failure. Actually, these servos are pretty decent, all metal gears. The weak point is where the 3 wires connect to the printed circut board. These 5th scales can shake parts- electrical connections apart real quick- I know this well-- lol!
 
The throttle/brake servo is more delicate than the steering servo. The end points need to be set or it won't last a minute. Even the name brand servos are short lived with a poor EPA (end point adjustment).

Never ran original radio. right off the bat I used a spare RX and my spektrum radio. TH servo forgets its position if I flutter TH. I plan on dumping all redcat electronics completely. only thing im using are two servos. Steering servos been alright but TH servo isnt worth pissing on.
