I don't know what all the K&N fuss is about. I've used them on all my cars and never had a problem in 10 years of off road racing.

I use this pre filter which you can cut in half and make 2 out of 1 and I use a moto X fiter oil.

The only time you can have a problem is racing in the rain - the simple fix is to cut up a coke bottle and slide that over the end.

I use the standard FG filter now which is very good but I only use it because it comes with the car, the foams come pre glued and they're only pence to buy.

A K&N filter is like anything in the RC world, use it right and you won't have problems with it.

cant go wrongg with the stock FG filter, TGN redeck, i used this combo for years with no probs at all just make sure you after each session, you clean & re-oil the filter :)
 
Stock FG filter and an outerwears style bag outside and not had any dirt in yet..
just got to keep on top of maintenance and keep it clean and oiled..
