what brace are you talking about pipe?
Its the brace that links the diff mounts with the large engine mount.Personally I would scap it and get a steel brace,I've bust two in the past and what you gain off weight loss for an ally brace you make up for when you hit a pool of mud and it sticks to the tyres........get a steel!!!

Well I spent a couple of hours on it myself last night. Put the layshaft gear on and ring gear on. Noticed that the bearing near the small gear was very noisy and not smooth so replaced it with a new one.

Also looks like the layshaft has worn down a bit with is a surprise becuase it quite thick metal. There was a bit of play where it goes through the bearing through the engine mount.

When I put the clutch bell and carrier back on the play was picked up and there's no wobbly now.

I think I have the meshing good but it seems harder to turn the gears than before, not sure whats causing this. both the spur and layshaft gears have a little play so not sure whats causing the resisitance.

Just got to put the pipe, real roll cage, wheelie bar, side plates and wheels back on and I should be able to give it a test and see if that noise is gone. Hopefully should be able to do this this weekend. Hope the noise is gone coz I don't know what else it could be.

If your layshaft had a wear mark in the area of the bearing then the bearing locked up and was not spinning. If the new bearing was not tigt on the shaft you need to replace the shaft or it will not be tight with the bearing and cause damage again.
The gears should be loose. There will be a bit of play in the rear gears. If you are using a plastic spur, take it off and check that the diff and spur gears are meshed with enough room to be smooth.

It will feel tight compared to before :clown: Im not surprised your bearings have taken a hammering with the amount of dust on your track! A bearing killer for sure  Worth it tho with the fun you guys have there :cool2:

I got it all together last night, gave it a test run on the bench.

No more gear noise!!!!

Thanks Rossco and everyone else for their input.

Gave it a proper run today at a grassy park, only lasted a few minutes. The bolts that hold the front of the exhaust on rattled loose again!

I really need to put in a bigger tap but don't have the tools to do this myself.

Might have to use the old muffley (stocky) until I can fix this properly.

you can see part of it in the pic. there is a spare hole on the engine block with threads.

you can see the brace I made from the engine block to that top piece... it's just some flat aluminum bar. I had to make a couple small bends and drilled holes in the aluminum. it's bolted to the spare threaded hole on engine case and used a longer screw through the dif top brace. with that installed I can remove the motor mount screws and the gears stay close together.
