ok my herby shell is almost complete, just gunna black the windows but ive drilled all the mounting holes etc.

Should i put anything around the holes where ive drilled to stop it from splitting etc cuz its fibreglass? ..i was thinking of some super glue to seal the edges of holes but not sure if thats the ebst thing to use?

Also, the inside has lots of sharp bits of fibre (stabbed myself about 20 times so far lol) should i give it a quick sand on the inside to make it smooth & if so again, should i go over it with summit to seal it?

will post pics when its done (tmrw hopefully!)

ta guys :)

Sand it smooth at every edge/corner, then paint it. That should lock in the fibers and keep it from splitting. Then put up some pics so we can see it.

hi mate,

its already painted, the guy who made it painted it then put a coating over it on outside so it looks shiny & smooth, its just the inside & edges that need some attention but dunno best way to do it, will give it a light sand but what about summit to seal it on the inside (if it needs it?) & the edges etc?

I have made 20ft fishing boats out of fibreglass and the fibres inside just get a light sand to break the loose fibres and then seal it with some paint...no need to worry about it as we don't bother with the paint to seal the fibres on the fishing boats... doesn't do them any harm...:w00t:
you only need to seal it for your own preferences after sanding..

just sand the edges with a fine paper and it will be fine..
the outer shiny surface is gel coat and that is painted into the mould before the glass fibres are put in so its a very tough surface and should be about 1-2 mm thick so scratches shouldn't show through:lol:

cool cheers, will just give it a light sand then :)

aye it feels solid, got it off ebay £45 incl postage so thought id give 1 ago see how it holds out :)

1 thing i have noticed though, ive had it now about 2 weeks, & some spots of it on the inside still feel tacky!? is this normal :o ?

if its still tacky then its 1 of 2 things..

1. the resin was not correctly mixed and the hardener has not worked in that little bit of resin
or
2. there has been something put on and leaving it sticky...

it will probably harden up over time so if its not bothering you just leave it or coat it in paint and that should seal it in...

if you need to clean it of then acetone will remove it but be carefull as it will eat its way through the good fibreglass as well but that will take quite a while..

ok ta mate, jus gunna leave it & hope it drys out, it aint too bad just seems to be in 1 or 2 corners where its a little tacky when you touch it

A couple of weeks ago I finally finished my 5T body fiberglass mold. IMO that resin is not fully cured. I usually spray on a few coats of PVA, to seal it from any oxygen to cure quickly. I usually wait a day or so after the PVA coats have dried and wash it off with dish soap and water.
