Over the winter I got my Savage out and looked at it to see what I needed to get this thing road legal again. It just wasnt doing it for me. You know those nitro are like cats, when ever you are looking for some good playing the darn thing has a mind of there own. I got on the savage forums and just wasnt doing it for me. I wanted some thing big and less maintance. I started looking at those 1/5 scale and those were the ones. After countless hours watching youtube and reading anything I could about them, it was time.

I set out today with my savage in tow to see what I could get for the darn thiing. $$ for the servos and controller. I had made up my mind that I could order one (FG) somewhere and go from there. Well I got to the store with every idea that all I wanted was servos and such. I was there a month ago and they had a used FG for sale. Thought the price was a tad high compared to what Dave had. It looked good but for the money I thought might as well get a new one. As they were pricing my savage I couldnt help but ask to see the FG on the wall. That was the only one I have seen in person so with all the info I had I had to make heads and tails of it. I saw the price was dropped and now my interest and pocket book starting jumping. The more I inspected it the more I looked and besides the awful decals and marker drawings on it, it looked really good. No scraches on the bottom just some scuffing looked pretty clean. A couple of nicks hear and there on the side and arms. I now understand what I have been hearing and being told about it. I am sure the guy at the hobby store figured I was just another guy looking at it because it has been for sale for quite some times. Like he said I catches the people eyes and that is about it.

As I sat and stared at it abut a half dozen people came over and took a look. I after an hour of just looking it over and going over my notes I had with me I told him to fire it up. Now I got his attention and he scramble to get some gas and in couple of minutes he had her running. After that I said lets do it, take the Savage in trade and put it towards the FG. Then I got the info about it, consignment thing, no pay had to take back, didnt think more than a dozen tanks was run though it. The hobby guy set it up for someone and got stiffed. I think after a year of having it sit there it was hurting his wallet to have it there.

I walked out of there about as happy I as could be. Took her home and cleaned and detail the whole thing. My college age daughter got in on the help and took off all those nasty decals. It shines like new. Polished the bottom plate and side so that they sparkle. Cleaned those rims and sprayed on some wet look tire stuff to finish the job. Cannt wait to get that girl dirty!

I thought I got a good deal, I am sure I could have gotten it cheaper. though I figured with what I got with it I saved alot, compared to what I would have spent.

I still have the stock pipe which at some point I will change. I figured I would learn how to run this thing first and then after a summer save up and add for the winter.

The only downfall I didnt like is I got only a FM receiver (JR). For the time being I thing I will get by I hope. I got the servo that have been recomended to me. I still need a flywheel outerwear and I am ready!!! Just waiting for the batteries to charge and hopefully Friday I will be running. Work safety meeting tommorrow so I will have to wait.

Thank you to all that answered my emails and gave info. Taking time out of there days to answer some knuckhead with a million questions and no money to pay them. Learned alot and now with all the questions as to why did this happen:oops::lol:

Once agian, thank you people for the info made this buying experience fun and now the fun begins.

welcome to the large of large scale. Your going to love the FG. I have 2 now! get some pics up when you can.

i know how excited you are mate, I got one yeasterday and still haven't stopped smiling!

Boy after a few weeks and 1 gallon of gas though it, I still smile every time I fire it up to run her around the house and up and down the road. Man that time cooks when at full throttle:celebrate:

Yes I may handle like a shopping cart and doesn't hit the jumps like the savage I had but man it is fun.

I took her to the track, knowing that it more than likely will suck butt there. My buddy just laughted at my as he would run 2 laps to my 1 with his truggy and buggy. I took it off the track and said in my best Al Bundy voice "lets rock" Well on the grass outside the track I think after seeing the FG run he knew not to mess with it.

Boy does that FG get some looks! While running around the yard, passing cars stop to see her go. Neighbors laugh, but I know they wont after I pipe it out.

What fun, heck it is nice out I think I will take her for a spin:celebrate:

Well,,,,first broken part today. Rear diff part number 6069/1. The cup for the drive lines. Cup that goes into the diff case its self.

doesn't look like a tough one, hope I don't have issuses in the gear box. Find out soon.

It had to happen on the last pass over a culvert:mad:

the genuine FG cups are very strong. I have a FG MT and have run about 35 tanks through it and they still look new!

go the genuine FG, little more expensive but good quality.

sperera,,,,,those cups are a take out and put in right?????

Or you have to take more things apart???? Do you add grease when replacing them?

I know there are stronge and I cannt figure out why it broke. Yes I will make sure I put good stuff back in.

I did by it used so maybe,,,,I hit the jump flat on all 4's. It was from the road to a ditch culvert so a 3 foot drop, had done it about 10 times before.

Also what made it break,,,,,if the staffs are tweeked would that do it?

they slide straight out, not need to remove anything but you get them out you need to undo the bolt that goes into the rear uprights to get the dog bones, one bolt either side and its done. couldnt be easier.

i have never seen or heard of anyone breaking the drive cups on an FG before, only thing I can think off is if you landed full WOT then the traction all of a sudden maybe too much for the cups to handle, still don't think thats the case but my only suggestion, when you land from a jump try to land off the throttle, takes allot of stress of the driveline.

yeasterday I had my MT at least 8 ft in the air, other than alloy engine mounts nothing broke so this maybe a one off, get the genuine cups and im sure it wont happen again.

did you get the MT new or second hand?

you can shoot some fresh grease in the hole where the outdrive plugs in. even the strongest parts break sometimes. maybe a rock got in there, suspension was in that wrong position when you hit the brake or throttle or.... the tips section (sticky)in this forum covers all the things to do really, so no need to retype all that.

sounds like you are having a blast. we are looking for a grassy area away from residential to run our 5ths on now. don't need huge jumps, just fun terrain and some rallycross type racing. we have our brushless sc trucks for beating on and big air. costs less to fix those too (and we break them... I think I fried my esc or motor last time out, broke those motor wires off a few times haha). my fg is an on road but it's old faithful. always starts, runs great, never had to rebuild it even. stripped steering rod end (plastic) and ate a ring and layshaft gear up. any upgrades are by choice now. can't go wrong owning an fg.

You have seen your weak link in your drive system.:D
It is very common to blow out a drive cup when you are on throttle on landing or if your truck so happens to bounce off the ground and land on throttle. It is a part you will want one on hand. It is however a part you will not break as common when you get used to the model and when to come off throttle. I myself have snapped two. One going from a garden to grass and hitting a 4x4 buried as a border. The second when beating it in a gravel pit and smacking into a large rock and popping just one tire up and then coming down WOT. Since then which is 2 years ago not another one. They have changed the style of the drive cups to have a wider end instead of the same size all the way to the end. Redesigned to give them more beef in that area.
NOT A BIGGY!!:rock-on:

Looks just like my part!

Yea I was on the throttle when it landed. Beginner driver here. Gunned it going from road to ditch and didnt let off. Well it is a cheap part and quick fix but not sure as to when it will be coming to the door. Didnt feel like spending 30 bucks for shipping for a 18 dollar part. Beside I am busy this week so running it will not be a big option.

Like I said earlier it does handle like a shopping cart and at times it is bouncy but a heck of alot of fun.

After looking a Pipes vids I like those cars he has. Man this 5th scale thing is alot of fun. My son is only 6 but he likes them so if I hang on for a couple of years I have an buildt in excuse to go get a couple more:laugh: For the time being he likes his walgrens suv but maybe a bigger one is in order, and thoughts?

if he's 6 yrs old, find him a slash to drive. they are pretty tough machines and will be a 5th scale to him. you can set the esc to beginner mode for half throttle too until he gets good control.

even the veterans still land on throttle too. I busted a dif case a few months back doing that very thing. it was going to lawn dart though. stock up on some of the usual stuff, especially when on sale. I always grab some of the firehammer stuff when I order from tower.. hinge pins are way cheaper. some are a tad longer but spacers fix that.

well time to get my nutech on the table again. semi just got aluminum lower rear arms, btb's dif seal mod (even my alloy case leaked a little grease) and added 50k dif oil. nutech is getting some fg stub bolts for the front brake discs.

driving is fun, but they are also fun to tinker on. some people like to do puzzles and such. I find it enjoyable tinkering as much as driving, maybe moreso

So right pipe,,,,about the driving and tinkering to alot of people.

Myself,,,,not much of a tinker, that is why I traded the savage in. I love to run/bash the stuff but it is nice to just wipe it off and put it away. I do to much of that at work that I really just want to relax with it at home.

Though I will say that after having this FG for a month I have quietly looked for parts and have an idea what I would like to do to it this winter:) with in reason. I still want to get it dirty and maybe a little bent up without crying.

Your semi and mustang have tweeked my interest in on road RC's. Look like a blast.

Ive also blown a drive cup in the same way, by landing WOT...I ended up upgrading to ball drives and so far so good....:)

Your in St. Paul, MN right? There are more FG dealers then you think here. The main one being MMR. MMR is one of two importers. The other being DDM. You can buy your parts at any HobbyTown but your main spots will be MMR or RC Car Kings. Both will have the part in stock. Call ahead.

id say landing WOT is the most common way of wrecking them, or getting one wheel in the air which loads up and when it lands everytghing is under allot of stress.

Didnt think of MMR. rccarkings are out of stock at this point so I order one from them. Ordered one from Daves and it is on the way. I figured the I will learn as I go as to what parts to have on stock:white-flag::laugh:

The rc car king guy said he is having problems with getting parts right now, might be a 2 week wait.

I actually live in the western wisconsin area just figured saying from St Paul maybe people would be alittle more in touch with that, then the little hick town I am from:laugh: Drive a 2 hour round trip or order online kind of a toss up. With all the knowledge on this forum makes ordering a tad easiler.

Yes there is and I would like to say Thank you to everyone that helped me with my purchase of my first 1/5 scale. After reading these post I feel I could work on anything:D

Gosh I knew when I first saw these machines they were the ones I would like and yes they are. Now to save money for more:rockon:;)
