Last weekend I finally ran my XT. First of all, I must say I'm running it at 3300ft high, with Baja air filter.

Started OK, but as soon as I started driving it, noticed a bog causing a "hole" on acceleration. My first thought was "thin air, so let's give the thing a bit less fuel". Wrong move, as this made things worst. Richened it at small steps, and almost half of a turn later the bog was gone.

However, opening the LSN also causes the idle to get lower and lower, to the point I ended with the idle speed screw all the way in, and it's still on the edge of an extremely low idle.

On the other hand, on the second tank I started to try some faster passes, just to find out that the engine was not accelerating past half rpm. "Too rich", I thought. Wrong, once more, it was starving on fuel, had to open the HSN almost 3/4 of a turn to get it running better.

As I'm not at sea level, I really thought that I would have to tune it leaner than factory settings, but reality showed the opposite.

I would really appreciate some other opinions about it ;)

Always start with factory settings and tune from there. Better to run a little rich, than guess and run too lean. Good thing you caught it before it seized. I'd reset and start over. And keep an eye on your plug color while you tune. You want a brown paper bag color. Do a high speed run and kill the engine immediately in order to get an accurate reading.

I must admit that I was a little overconfident about my carb being adjusted from factory, and didn't checked it. My fault.

This weekend I will follow your tips and start over from factory settings.

Thanks ;)

I have never found one to be at the base settings out of the box. Close but still off some.

Let us know how it goes.

As I sit the elevation is 5200 ft and the truck ran its best out of the box and it to was just a tad off base setting I run just a touch rich. due to the places I run it elevation of 4200 ft up to 7000 ft I have to tune wet or dry in small amounts nothing drastic

Didn't had the opportunity to run the truck this weekend, but checked the needles.

LSN was exactly on the factory spot (1 1/4 turns) after my first tuning. It was originally about half a turn leaner.

HSN was still 1/4 of a turn leaner than the recommended, and that's after being richened almost 3/4 of a turn.

As I stated before, the factory adjusts on my unit were WAY out to the lean side. Dangerous situation, if this truck was on the hands of an inexperienced person, the engine would much probably be seized by now.

Lesson learned, never trust the factory, especially the chinese :)

I don't believe the motors are ever started before their first owners. They are just assembled.

I'm in Denver at 5280ft and my XB ran like a champ out the box and still does. Sounds like you messed with the needles to much. Start over at stock settings and also do fuel tank vent mod. That was the first problem I came across out the box...

They came messed up from factory ;)

The base settings are just a starting point. They will get it started. It is a rich setting and good for brake in. Tuning should follow.
