Hey guys, new to the forum and 1/5 scale world. I have a MT pro V3 that I bought used, and have been doing some tweaks to it. First time out I hit a stump and did a end over end. I cracked the front gear box causing the left suspension to have some slack.

My question is what is involved in repairing this besides replacing the cracked gear box. Do I have to rebuild the differential since I am taking the gear box apart? If I do have to rebuild the differential, what do I need parts wise to do the job right?

If only the outside case is broken then the differential should be fine. Just inspect everything when you tear it down.

Pay close attention to how the gears mesh with the new case. Preassemble everything clean & dry to check the gear lash and how mesh. You don't want too much lash or play between the pinion and ring. If there is hopefully you can just shim the pinion. HPI sells shims that will work there. Also make sure the pinion and drive cup are tight against the bearings before tightening the set screw. You don't want any in & out play on the pinion gear.

The gears should mesh pretty smooth with only a little play/lash.

The better they mesh the longer they last.

Thanks for the reply Bill. It wasn't nearly as bad I thought it was going to be once I got into it. I have to say these cars are pretty easy to work on once you get the small tools.

You're welcome. Sorry if I made it sound complicated. Just wanted to try to describe the gear lash thing.
