Searched around the forum pretty hard first, posting this in the general engine area as it applys to all models.

Do you vent your gear cover? Will it extend the life of your all metal gear set during extended bashing. I assume with steel gears, some dust getting in there and being gritty is of less concern than heat. Truth or fiction?

If it's good to vent, what's the best way, front and back so air moves through, top / bottom/ all around, ect ect blah blah.

I have an XB and an MT and have vented both, each have steel gears. I figure at the very least some cooler air may keep the bearings a bit cooler.

On my XB, I just drilled a bunch of small holes all around the cover. On my MT, I just cut away the front of the cover. I've seen some people use mesh, and some have cut small sections out.

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking of cutting out the leading quarter of it, and the rear quarter and install some metal mesh.

Others thoughts appreciated!

I drilled a few holes in mine, as to where you can squirt some lithium or wd40 right on the gears, and a small hole on the bottom of cover for the grease to drip out. 30 tanks of gas like this...and all is fine! :)
