That is normal. The pinion just floats. It is possible to shim it if you prefer.

I was thinking it wasn't doing the gears any favours.

It also allows the D gear to float.

It's not the best setup that's for sure. It really doesn't cause any premature wear that I've ever seen. It is better them a too loose or tight mesh.

I might look at shimming some of the play out but still leaving it a little loose

yeah metal gears. plastic plate. i have broken 1 plate. But i think that was cause the bolts came out & i didn't know. oops. the bolts stripped & fell out. My project build will either have a belt drive or 2 speed.
