on my 990 I would wip the filter off and plug the passagewith my finger, does the trick but can be a pita with certain filters

I used to do that but on advice from mike1970 I now prime the carb then pull engine over 3-4 time on full throttle then a couple more pulls with no throttle it fires straight up and will do for the rest of the day no more removing the filter

I guess it depends what works for you.i use a en tuning filter, can take it off in 2 secs; one pull with your thumb in the hole and it fires, another pull or two with filter on and it starts.
you can plug the pipe too and pull the starter.

lol, yh i cant curl 35kgs anymore, more like 25s.
im talking about the 990 that was on the obr,it wouldnt flow enough fuel forthe 70. that uses a bigger carb but doesn't have a primer but has a choke.without the release valve its almost impossible (especially with my matchstick arms)but pulls easy with valve depressed..4 or 5 slow pulls to bring fuel through, choke on and normally starts within 3 or 4 pulls.

youd have trouble pulling a worn 23 over without the spark plug in ;)
