ive searched and read several posts but cant find the answer so maybe my problem is different. my truck would run fine for the 1st 10 min or so. then when i would start getting on the throtle it would make a grinding noise. i have no stripped teeth anywhere. so i tried putting the truck anginst a wall and would throttle to see where noise was coming from. the pinion spun, spur spun, other gear (think called layshaft) opposite the spur spun, but wheels didnt turn and made grinding noise. i took diff apart but no damaged gears but fluid was REALLY thick. also this is upgrade heavy duty all aluminum diff. icand figure where its coming from??????????????????

also what fluid should be in there? lithium grease of a silicon diff fluid? the last stuff was REALLY thick??

From what you have said you have eliminated the diff as a fault. Sounds like there is no drive to the diff so either your layshaft gear is slipping against the diff gear or possibly the diff gear has come off its carrier. Check the alignment and meshing & make sure your engine mounts are tight.

ive checked the spur and layshaft. nothing slips nothing is loose. all grub screwz are in place. could the diff fluid freeze?????

Pick the back end up and spin 1 wheel by hand. If the diff is working the other wheel should spin in the opposite direction. If this is fine then I would recheck the quality and meshing of layshaft gear and diff gear. My layshaft gear went & the teeth were worn on the leading edge in a certain place (not all way round) causing it to slip.

might be clutch related.

I had similar sounding problem only last week. I repalced the small layshaft gear and the ring gear around the diff and problem solved. When I removed the rear end I noticed allot of metal shavings underneath indicating the gears were meshing too close.

Also check the large engine mount . the one that the layshaft runs through.
I had the same problem and turned out that The mount was bad . also the bearing on the lay shaft might be bad too. I just replaced the large engine mount and the bearings on the layshaft and my noise went away.
Try using an long screwdriver and push on the front or the back of the layshaft and see if there is any play.
