So, Wish me luck gentlemen... I now have 2 head gaskets to replace.

The Dunerunner gasket went last week when the head bolts worked themselves loose.

Yesteray, showing off my bad ass MT with new dominator, the rear bolt holding the dominator to the frame came out while running and I am guessing that allowed enough wiggle/vibration because the head gasket blew right under the exhaust... DANGIT!!!

So, today I am going to make a head gasket from posterboard for one of them until my new box of goodies gets here from DDM (Probably next Wednesday or so).

I love working on my trucks, I don't love when all my trucks need to be worked on at the same time... makes me sad :(

Keep the cold ones close by and make a day of it. Doesn't sound all that bad to me.

I am totally baffled now...

I broke down the Dunerunner engine just a few minutes ago, hoping the gasket in it would be solid enough to make a good pattern from. When I got the head off, I find no gaske at all... there was some silverish gunk in a few spots, but nothing else.

So, I will still make a gasket for it, but what are they using at the HY factory? Is this silver gunk (that looks like pipe dope) their gasket material? Was it at one time solid and mine dissolved like sugar in coffee? Anybody?

Joe same thing happened to me removed head because head bolt broke.i wanted to use old gasket as a template to make a new one.after removing the head there was no gasket or even a sign of any gasket.i can't explain it either Im thinkin it never had one that's why my head bolts kept comin loose..

desismileys_6581.gif I have seen them dissolve but not that much. That head must of been really loose. Normally you find a piece of the gasket just blown out.

with the MT, I can see a piece of the gasket sticking out under the exhaust port... I have this engine broken down already and really don't want 2 broken down at the same time, so I am just following the shape of the head and making my own... will take longer but I think that means I will be more proud when it is running again... Or pissed when it is not- either way. ha ha ha

Thing is, there are no dowels to hold these heads in place. Once the bolts come loose the head starts shifting around the gasket gets sanded down to nothing.- Pay close attention to your intake joe- its on the verge of leaking- intake manafold to head area. You may want to look at the heavy paper on a spiral notebook for gasket materal---it will squish less than the poster paper. Man, it was 99 degrees in Portland yesterday.- Comeing up the interstate east bound on I84- colunbia gorge way into the night, there were dozens of desert big horn sheep crossing the interstate to get to the columbia river for water and green food- deer too. Lucked out and still have the grill and windshield intact.

Thanks Alfred, I also have the aluminum manifold with nylon gaskets coming for this engine, as well as a new air filter, velosity stack, and carb... so Im not too concerned with the pos plastic intake :D

Now that this thing took it's sweet time uploading, here is the head gasket I made... I figured a pretty orange would show if/where something leaks through :D

I have already re-installed the head.

So, I turn on the DR, Wake up the killer bee, flip the choke, give her 2 pulls and there is that amazing pop I needed to hear.

So, flip the choke lever up and give her another pull and VRRRRROOOOOMMMM!!!!!

Just as I started to smile from ear to ear, I heard MMMOOOOORRRRRV (the engine stopping).

So, it did not lock up, it did not sputter or anything, it was just as if I used the red button and killed it.

Choked it again, it popped, started it again, same thing. Every time.

Ideas? I want to prove my $0.07 gasket works :D

Go back to the base settings on the carb. Your previous tune might have been compensating the air leak. When ever the engine comes apart plan on a retune.

I couldnt tell you what the old gasket was like... it did not exist when I opened the engine... ha ha ha

I have done base settings- if the carb has an air leak somewhere, would that cause this? If so, I need to make new gaskets for it too- the ones on the carb were all taken off and cleaned- and half ass inspected.

Nice job on the gasket, I'm pretty sure the Carb or manifold would do that. On my MT the manifold was warped and just wouldn't start then I used rtv until my new manifold came in.

i agree about the rtv. gas will curl this up and dissolve it.- As good as you are with the knives, is there a place where the jeeps other equipment is maintaine? They may have bulk gasket materal. you would only need just a little piece to build a replacement intake manafold gasket. A gift from uncle sam to you! via all us taxpayers- thumbs up from me- its fine with me!!
