Does anyone here know how to heat treat steel?? I have a shaft on my home made 2 speed that keeps getting worned down by the oneway bearing.

From what I know, you have to get it a red hot color and then allow it cool down at room temperature. Don't quench it in water or oil, that will anneal it and it's not what you want. Also, I heard that to truly heat treat, you should keep it that red hot color for about 2 hours or so meaning an very hot oven.
In the book I read, the guy says that you should either do it for the 2 hours, or not do it at all. He says allot of people get the misconception of it happening quickly, but truly doesn't do much for the part if done fast.
