Help my friend with his tires

Hi guys,


I sold my XT to my friend and roomy. We tore it apart, and are cleaning and re-assembling it.


Well, we came to the tires... typical XT tires, the foams are shot but the rubber and rims seemed alright. He's short on cash so we're trying to get it going with as little cash spent as possible.


Well, we were boiling off the tires and one little part was not boiled enough. He punched a hole through the side wall of the tire trying to get it off. It's not a huge hole, can put your pinky finger through it.


Ok, so he's considering getting adapters and new wheels/tires. He wants wheels like mine tho... a monster truck needs monster truck tires!


I saw someone put MT tires on his XT, of course I can't find that thread now. That's not going to work very well with a single steering servo tho, but it's an option for him. Can we get tires to fit a baja that have tractor style tread?


On another note, if someone wanted to buy his XT for a decent amount, we'd find him an MT and then we're running the same truck which would be ideal. We're just not looking forward to selling a truck that needs tires. We were also going to get him a TX/RX with 3rd channel to go with the 3rd channel Killer Bee.


Any input would be greatly appreciated. I think I'll see what we can come up with for tires, maybe tomorrow I'll post it in the For Sale section and see what happens...
 
That was the original plan Cordy, in fact, we even have the noodle! However, we're not sure what to do with it exactly. I figured cut a section in half and wrap it around the rim... then what? Glue the ends together? Glue it to the rim?

I was also considering a "jumbo" noodle. You can get them much larger, perhaps large enough to cut off the end and hollow it out, then there's a consistent foam without a "glue joint" or whatever. I've tried to find tutorials on how people have done this but haven't found a step by step guide. My biggest worry is getting them together well enough that they won't need attention for a while. It took a lot of time and effort to boil off those tires.

Another problem is the hole in the side wall. Do you think that some tire glue will hold it together? Should we pick up a patch kit? If we patch it using a bike tire patch kit for instance, I suggested to him that we put a patch of equal size on the other side of the tire to counter balance.

Yeah, my buddy was so frustrated with himself for putting that hole in the tire he was about ready to spend the money on adapters and new wheels on the spot. I'm still convinced we don't NEED to do that.
 
Wal-Mart also sells foam in the crafting section that I used on mine. It comes with two squares in one pack and two packs did the job. I have run a gallon of gas now and they are still holding up.
 
So I assume you were able to fabricate seamless foams? That would be ideal in my opinion. I think after work I'm going to try and help him patch that hole in the side wall. We'll give it a day to dry and see if it holds well.

On another note... I need to pay to post something for sale here? I just remembered I looked into it a while ago and I need contributor status or something.

All this truck needs now, besides assembly, is tires and a 3-channel TX/RX. Or a 2-channel kill switch, he has a Killer Bee 3-channel and noise filter. Oh, and we were going to get a roll cage built similar to mine, his brother is a welder. Has an X-Can to put on, Hitech servos, HPI air filter, NGK plug, gun metal colored aluminum shock towers, extra front bumper.

I went to Lowe's and picked up a 8 foot piece of pipe insulation foam. They have 2 grades of it. Being the big spender, I went all out and bought the $6 piece. The $2 piece was really crappy. Not nearly as dense. I cut the pieces to fit around the rim and superglued them to make them one piece. They're not perfect, but work quite well. as for the cut in the sidewall, I'd try superglue/tire glue first. Then, only if it doesn't hold, a tire patch on the inside of the tire. Keep us up to date !
 
i used to use pool noodles also but found something better. can't remember the exact name of them so i'll try to descibe them. they are square floor matts about 24"s squared and come in different colours and join together. normally you'll see them in kids area's of a house so they have something alittle soft to play on. they don't break down when wet and are ferm enough to work great. i boiled off my xb tires and mounted them on a set of fg buggy rims and used them as inserts. plus the rims gives you alittle wider stance.
 
I had the same problem with my foams and cut a camping sleep mat and double layered it and its the best they have ever been 10 bucks and u get 6ft /3ft

We took some tire glue to that hole last night and we'll test it out tonight to see how it's holding. I'll show him these options and we'll go from there.
