I purchased an FG Baja 4wd, & added some hop ups etc.

Ran it for the 1st time today, breaking engine in on 1/2 throttle & this happens

IMG_0492.gif

It had a 19th pinion & upgraded spur, alloy carrier etc.

How do you stop this from happening, any bulletproof setup available, will the hydro brake be contributing to the problem ? It's the only brake on the car.

All help kindly appreciated, really don't know what to do :(

cant see why thats happened im running the same hydro setup on mine as this and run steel gears 18/46 and they have been fine since day 1 over 3 years hard abuse now and no signs of wear

was the 19t pinion alloy or steel i cant see the hydro is to blame i did run a 19/46 ratio but it never lined up as good as the 18t with the 46t so it maybe that

It's still got to be mesh - spacing and alignment.
Is the pinion plastic?
Many would go to alloy on the pinion, with a plastic spur.
If that spur is steel, then you definitely require a steel pinion, no less.
You can go plastic on plastic, or an alloy pinion with a plastic or delrin spur.

If that makes sense?

by looking again at the pics atom id say it looks a alloy pinion and steel spur gear i think that and the fact a 19t don't mesh as good as the 18t is the cause

Thanks guys, I will have to strip the assembly, will replace with steel pinion 18th.

Does my spur gear look like it can be saved with some filing ?

I also have the hardened layshaft do you think it could be bent, will double check.

Will post pics later, it's a looker :)

Could be wrong, but the spur doesn't look too bad - as you say, perhaps a little fettling.
The question is why 'a little', which leads to your other question.

Part of the spur seems OK, the other looks a little worn, which would imply it's off centre a little, or even, as you suggest, that the layshaft is bent.

Al.

aluminium drive gear want work with a steel spur gear will only wear very fast

I also doubt you have a bent lay shaft i would also check for any binding, worn bearings, dragging brake pads ect
if this is all good and you have the correct gear combo and mesh theirs no reason why you will have that problem

gear combination with the correct mesh
steel on steel
plastic on plastic
Aluminium on plastic

Thanks everybody, new steel 18th pinion & steel 46t gearwheel will be ordered.

I will replace the bearings as well, may go for ceramic in this area to help with heat & load.

If your intrested it's on rc Largescale forum in the FG section.
