My understanding is that you need a Light Controller of some sorts or you can just plug them into your main battery or with a on/off switch, i don't think you can use your rx receiver alone to power them up....I have the KillerRC light Kontroller v1 but the v3 gives you more modes....

That's correct. You need a light controller if you want to remotely turn on/off LED lights.
