Your thoughts of WOT on a elevated XB to simulate high speed run. Is this bad because there is no wind cooling the engine? Can this cause engine failure? Just wondering folks....

Some people tune that way. It's done by listening to the engine sound. It is not done for extended periods of time. For plug checks I would do speed runs.

+1 what DAD said...

IMHO you have to be very good to tune a gas engine by sound where you are taking full advantage.

I wouldn't tune it elevated. When it's elevated there's no load on the drive train and therefore no load on the motor so you can get a lean condition when you do start driving it hard on the ground. As for cooling, don't worry, the motors flywheel has cooling fins and acts as a fan so there is always air blowing over the cylinder. These motors don't require outside air flow over them like a nitro.

Its an easy method to get in the ball park on a tune. After that only very minor adjustments will need to be made.

Ball park is the key word. ;)

I just don't want the OP to have a false sense of security that he can go out and run it hard after doing this elevated.

I would never recommend it to anyone. It's ok for experienced tuners. If the tuner was experienced the question would not get asked, I guess. :)
