i would like to fabricate my own pipe, just purchasing a manifold/header pipe. i was wondering if anyone has cut open an aftermarket performance exhaust to see what is happening inside. a picture would be awesome. just wondering if the insides are hollow or are there exhaust redirect plates and chambers?

p.s. i will have to do the first pipe in steel because thats what i'm set up to weld at home.

I can assure most pipes are hollow inside. I have cut open and designed many. There are a few silencers that are baffled.

A 2 cycle pipe is about sound travel and speed . There is some math and formuas to achieve good results.

Individual header components may be hard to find since most manufactures are chroming or coating their parts yopu will have difficulty welding on them.

I made my flanges for the header out of aluminum for cost reason of having them cnc machined it was cheaper in aluminum than Stainless.

Hope that answers some of your questions.
