is there any benefit to be had in fitting a wider insulator block and so lengthing the inlet track, or a narrower one to shorten it?

they do make larger or longer intakes and other intake upgrades like "juice boxes" but they all had no noticable performance gains. it works in "theory" but not in reality. you might want to look into something like these. the plastic insulators don't mach the ports on the cylander and the pulse port is sometimes off(always check the gaskit to make sure the pulse port is not blocked). these will help with that and cure any possible air leaks from a cracked plastic intake

edit: if you are searching for upgrades on the intake side of the motor that make a noticable diffrence, check out a reed kit or an 813 pumper carb. the reed kit is like a check valve that blocks the fuel from returning into the carb on the up stroke and the 813 carb has an eccelerator pump to get you off the line quicker.
