last weekend i killed the motor in my nitro tc3. it was a rossi pixi black i had bought back when i first got my ntc3 way back when they first came out. the motor had been rebuilt last year and had around 1/2 a gallon through it, and the piston broke. a piece broke off the skirt and the piston was cracked all the way up, looked like a manufacturing defect. unable to find parts (took months to find a piston and sleeve last year), and the lack of nitro touring racing in my area made me decide to go a different route. also the talk about an rc drag club starting locally it just enforced the fact of what i needed to build.

yup, im building a big block nitro tc3.

the motor shown is an old ofna hyper 8 port .21 i had around (its junk, wrist pin clip came off, motor wasnt that old at the time) that im using for mock up. so far all ive done is build a set of mounts for it. unsure yet of what motor ill run, it wont be bigger than a .21 as ill be sacraficing speed with the lack of rpm of a bigger motor. the header and exhaust is going to be by far the biggest hurdle, i have a couple of options. one, build a long header and run a typical bigblock pipe, or two, build my own pipe thats the same design as the factory ntc3 pipe, just bigger.

let me know what you think.

yep, killed the tires. those were left overs from when i raced, the parking lot i was running on last weekend was hell on tires, including my 1/5 tires.

as for the body, im not sure what ill do there yet. i was told onroad motors use shorter heads as they have more airflow over them than a buggy. i looked at some onroad motors and i hadn't noticed, going to have to research that more.

haven't done much more as of yet, however i scored a wicked deal on an engine. i just cant get away from those Axe Rossi engines. scored a complete engine, header, marine head, spare crankcase and some other bits, all brand new, for $45us.

my motor showed up today, typical joys on an ebay engine. the motor is brand new as stated, however it has a 1/4" thread longshaft crank, and it looks like a 7 year old who is using a dremel for the first time ported it (the add said nothing about it being ported). although for $45, as long as the motor runs and i get 1/2 to 1 gallon of fuel through it ill have my moneys worth. it took a lot of screwing around to get a clutch mounted to the sucker, i ended up having to drill and tap the factory ntc3 short shaft pilot to fit the motor and i had to shim the flywheel out. in the end it will all work, however having to shim the flywheel means i need to move the motor 1/8" towards the front of the car, meaning the nice motor mounts i built arent going to work and i have to start over. oh well, i guess ill save them for the next motor.

Nice project. Definately looking forward to this build.
May be havinga future project of my own. I'm lookin at a Serpant 950R for some drifting duty, lol. We'll see what happens with it.

ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yea ok, enough drama. got the rest of the parts i was waiting for. aside from breaking my tap off in one motor mount and yet having to build another, its done. it fired right up and wouldnt stay running, idled high. pulled the carb off and found a weird silicone like substance in the motor and after cleaning the whole motor out and sealing it up, it runs fine. i also will have to put some stiffer clutch springs in. im running a 3 shoe flywheel and my stock savage clutch with the softest springs i have but the clutch is engaging at idle and applying the brakes pulls the motor way down.

this engine is a beast, sounds real snarley. should be enough to break some drivetrain parts

just a little update. motor is all broken in, the thing absolutly flies. i need a taller 2nd gear and to shorten the header a bit for a bit more top end rpm. despite the amount of power it is still quite driveable even on 24mm rubber tires. it will spin out if you hit the throttle out of a turn. i have a plan for taller gearing however im unsure when ill be able to do the machining for it.

and as promised i did break it, the rear diff melted. i was expecting it, i just didnt know when it would happen. of coarse this had to happen before i got the camera out. i ordered a pair of ring/pinions for it, along with shim kits and new bulkheads.

well, 18 days later i have some new parts to show off. took me a long time to find someone that made these, hope they are worth it

for those that haven't figured out yet, they are aluminum diff gear sets. i figured even with proper shimming the plastic diff gears just wont last with this motor. i never expected them to. these gearsets are made by dynotech racing, a company that primarily builds dirt oval cars. they only sell them as a ring and pinion set, however they don't recommend running both aluminum gears as they will wear very quickly. i chose to run the stock pinions with aluminum ring gears, they are easier to change and they are $3 for 2.

ill be honest, im not 100% happy with the company, charged me for priority shipping and sent it first class, and it claimed they were a direct fit for the tc3/ntc3/b44, however i had to hand fit the thrust washers as the teeth go a little deeper. this wasnt a huge deal, maybe tc3 thrust washers are smaller, i just ground mine down.

also, check out my new see through diff mod

rich is getting his license finally... I can't believe he just lived without...I'd go nutz. Dave got his license back today and car insured (he's driving me to chilli to get my new car tomorrow). I won't have to pick anyone up so can stuff my car with rc's and track making crap. I was at princess auto and saw mini pylons but they were $5 each... Need to go visit some of the local fire depts and gets some old hoses
