Working on my 30.5cc fuelie I snapped off the screw that hold the clutch to the crankshaft.

Question: Is it worth taking to a machine shop to have them get the screw our or just buy a new crankshaft. The engine is virtually new. I just hate to break it open for crank replacement.

Any tips or ideas? I have done the easy out and all. Heated it. No Luck.

If I do go with a crank should I get a "stuffed" one? Or a long stroke one?

Thanks

Depends on how much they charge you to do it and how that compares to a new crank. You can go with a stuffed crank, but be warned that sometimes the "stuffing" breaks off and can ruin your engine. I've seen it happen a few times. The 30.5 already has a +2mm crank in it, you can't go any longer without having to modify the cylinder for more clearance. Either that, or you can run a thicker cylinder gasket, but that's going to take a lot of trial and error to get the squish within spec. Better to stick with a +2mm crank.

Drill it out those cheap bolts drill out easy there not grade 8 or hardened.i bet u can get it done with out the machine shops help and expense...

I've had a similar problem, snapped the screw that goes thru pinion and into clutch bell on the dbxl. Haven't gotten either screw out, about to install third one. Got to figure out how to remove broken piece, this is getting expensive.

I was trying to find this screw but hardened. Spoke to krashkrieg he said go stainless, wasn't sure if there were any other options.

McMaster has some. Part # 91290A252. I think a stud and a locknut would be the way to go. I remember the Baja's had the same problem with the pinion bolts snapping. With a stud, you won't have to worry about that because you're not constantly torquing down on the bell, the locknut will take most of the load and you won't be snapping off screw heads.

Thanks really appreciate it.

Spent some bucks and got a quality ez out. No luck.

Since I have to replace the crank bearing I am thinking replacing the crankshaft. That way I have no issues later.

Thanks for the response.

you can get grade eight bolts at a decent hardware store, or a motorcycle shop. If you have a torch- heat the crank end. not too much. the bolt has one of 3 problems- partally stripped bottomed out hanging up where it sheared off. might just want to spring for a new crank. use the messed up one as a test bed to learn the best method to remove. yea theres all kind of ways to remove bolts, spendy though, theres a guy in CA that has a type of hollow rod that uses sound waves to actually shatter bolts to pieces. this is used on non replaceable parts- steel bolts siezed up in soft metals-- carb bodies- ect.
