Is the diff cups still a problem?

Hey, my first post here. :) I am the owner of two Maverick Blackout MT v2, which is the same as the Redcat Rampage MT v2. One is upgraded with Dominator Pipe and lots of other stuff and one is still stock, but I have some serious plans for it to turn into a race truck.

Anyway, I have had two of my diff cups breaking on the MT that I am running. First the rear left broke and now the rear right has also broke while just running on grass without any jumps. I haven't taken it apart yet but I am pretty certain that it has broken on the same spot as the first one, the hole in the shaft where the pin enters inside the diff.

I've heard from people that this should not be a problem anymore and that Redcat makes the diff cups in a new stronger material. Is this true? And if so, do they still have the same part number or a new one? Because when the first diff cup broke I ordered two with part #50031. And if it is the same part number, how would one know if it is a new or old version?

Do I still need to temper the new ones? Will take it apart tomorrow, considering tempering the shafts at the diff cups just to be sure.

When Redcat gets improvements the old just get replaced with the better version. If you just ordered a set it would be the newest version unless you ordered from a dealer that had old inventory. If you ordered from a dealer then your best bet would be to contact them.

I would still temper them just to be safe.

It happens, but it's not as common as it used to be. They have the same part #. More than likely you have the latest version of the MT, so you'd have the stronger diff cups. Wouldn't be a bad idea to temper them, though.

Thanks. Hopefully it was new stock, the one I replaced hasn't broken yet so. I'll temper them anyway just to be sure.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Cool avitar.

Thanks!

It had indeed broken on the same place as the first one, the known weak spot at the hole. I have now tempered the rear diff cups with a torch with butane gas. Was kind of hard to see the transition from blue to silver, but the end result seems to be good. Won't know until I have driven some more though.

Regarding the front I will order two more diff cups which hopefully are from the new stock and then I'll temper them and replace the old ones currently in the front. They aren't very expensive so I think it will be more worthwhile then to waste time on bad ones.

Awesome. Tempering the diff cup shafts helps A LOT. Glad you got it sorted.

Hey Guys,Just got a new V3 MT and measured the diff cups to sleeve them and all four of them are 19mm od and a sort of dark bronze color. I have read that the diff cups are 20mm od because guys have sleeved them and used 20mm id rings or carbon tube. Does anyone know if what I have are the latest ones or older ones. How would I tell the difference. One thing I know for sure is mine are 19mm and different color from what I google.Regarding what I wrote above, I spoke to Chris at Redcat and he acknowledged that the new diff cups are hardened and different in color. They now have a very dark copper or bronze like look to them as opposed to the black anodize that they used to be. The new ones are 19mm od as opposed to 20mm like all the other cups. Something to consider if sleeving which is what I will be doing even though they are hardened. Here is a pic of the diff cups on my MT.Mike
