So, I picked up a redcat rampage TT yesterday, brand new. I charged the hump pack and got my DX3S hooked up and set up, then I tried starting it. When I pull the pull start the whole car moves forward like the clutch is already engaged. I put it on a crate thinking that maybe if I run it a bit at idle it will be alright and the clutch will start working, instead, it chewed up the plastic gears on the side. When it would run, it had to idle kind of high, when I hit the brakes it kills the motor. Anybody know why this actually happens? I have the hpi upgraded clutch that I never put in my baja but I don't have any of those gears and the LHS is closed today. I didn't build the car, someone at the LHS did.

Sounds like your thinking along the right lines about the clutch engaging when your pulling the starter. So it still has the stock clutch spring? Why did the LHS "build" it. They are RTR and don't need assembly or dissassembly out of the box. How did the gears strip? They normally don't strip unless in a bind or really hot. If your TT was in the air the gears would spin the tires if not bound up which is what you said it did on the ground when you yanked the starter. I think your going to have to take it apart to find the prob but if the LHS had it apart maybe you should take it back? Vent or remove your gear cover. Check out the checklist in the general section. If you hit the brakes and the engine rpm changes your radio and or throttle linkage isnt set right and sometimes the idle set screw on the carb.

Without starting the car turn on your electronics. Watch the throttle on the carb. Brake. The throttle should not close. It should stay where it was at neutral. Your idle screw might also have the idle too low.

Well, the LHS said they built it, I think it has that $50 upgrade kit on it, I have a bunch of random spare parts for it and a DOM pipe. I am not sure why they stripped. I took it all apart last night but it was about 2am so I just quit. Time to look at it again shortly. I will check the idle screw, I adjusted the idle on the radio to get it to start and I left it idle for 10 min or so, I haven't run it on the ground yet. Only 2 of the 25 tooth gears stripped, I think I have an idea why. I will see what I can figure out, I will put my new clutch on also. This thing looks really sweet!

Ok, got it all figured out!! They put the upgrade kit on the car so they had to take off those gears in order to take off that plate where all the shafts go through. They must not have had the clutch bell lined up right. They did tell me it had upgraded steel gears on it. I am going to try to work something out where they pay for some. It runs awesome and works great minus the fact that the two gears are pretty tore up.
