Ive posted this in my re-build thread but will post it here for a wider audience.......

This is a pic of the air intake after removing the K&N filter from the marder I recently bought as a project. You can clearly see a lot of sand ingress so you can imagine what the internals will be like after that! The compression is poor and there are no prizes for guessing why!

I bought a new engine for it due to having the filter off & expecting the worst so fortunately don't have to worry about having a non-runner on my hands but any noobes beware of the risks!

If you are running a K&N make sure you have an oiled pre-filter & outerwares to protect your engine. My 1st marder came with the same filter but had only 2 tanks thru it and was still clean inside. Rather than change the full unit back to stock I bought an FG foam pre-filter (£3) and oiled correctly it works fine for me running at our site which is grass.

The TGN dual stage pre-filter is probably the best available for approx £10 and some use their wife's stockings (or their own maybe ) rather than the outerwares. Make sure you periodically clean them both and re-oil the pre-filter after cleaning. There are threads on here with tips on oiling.

The std FG and HPI filters are good and probably a safer bet for most, again used with a pre-filter or outerwares if conditions are likely to be bad.

Im sure there will be comments for and against and I am not saying don't use them just make sure you use them with caution!

That does not look very good. Though i must say i have ran god knows how many tanks in really dry/dusty/sandy areas with a K&N filter and never had that problem. Only problem i had with the K&N filter is that it has some tendency to fall of if the rear of the car lands really hard, made me change back to the stock one since it can be bolted in place instead. He must not have oiled the filter or something.

you must of been one of the lucky ones mate! i had one on mine and was cleaned and oiled but it still let dust and sand through and killed my engine, would never have one fitted again ;)

The K&N filter is perfectly ok when it's used correctly as Dwarfy says but you must make sure it's the right type.

This one even though it say HARM on is the one you want to go for

Along with this adapter plate

Which gives a much better seal than the plastic type due to you being able to drill three screw holes in the alloy to hold the filter in better.

This is the pre filter I feel is the best as you can cut it in half and get 2 for the price of 1. Make sure this is oiled with a quality oil as used for moto x

Having used this filter all season so far, I think this is probably the best thing for the money. As with the others, make sure you have oiled it well.

And always zip tie one of these on around the housing.

Plus you can wash these with your work clothes and the wife will never know.

done the same thing with a k,n filter at deeside mine had 2 pairs of nylons over it, my buggy just stop,d the sand just wrecked the whole motor and the carb, the standard hpi baja filters are hard to beat i think in any conditions . k,n are more a road filter i know you can buy oil for them but can,t see that doing a lot with sand etc,,

I've raced with a K&N for years in all sorts of conditions, with the right oiled filter and bag on they're as good as anything I've used. The reason I use the FG ones is that they're free, not to mention they're free and they're a bloody good filter.
