take the foam insert out and clean it in the sink with some dish soap or simple green. ring it out and then squish it around in a paper towel to get the rest of the moisture out. draw stripes up and down the hole air filter and put it in a sandwich bagy and sqish it around real good. i use a red airfilter oil so you can see when its properly coated. do the filters come out on a k&n filter? wasnt qa big fan of them. they let too much stuff thru. you should think about a dual stage unless thats what you have

i would recommend you not use the K&N filters if your going off road. they work but they don't catch a hell of alot. for onroad they are pretty good, as the onroad courses are less dirty, but off road, you ll likely end up toasting the topend and maybe the bottom too.

make sure your outerwares is nicely closed up around the back of the filter and you may be ok. putting a small nitro filter inside may help alot, as long as its snug inside the K&N and doesn't have any small openings. air goes to the path of least risistance, so if theres an opening it will flow thru that opening instead of thru the filters.

Yeah, its the filter off the savage, fits nice and snuggly, put the sheild ontop of the pre filter, and just orderd a new outerwears as the one i have has a few holes
