I got 2 KM001 from Dan - Awesome!
Car#1
After going through 2 tanks, I did some jumps and did some good roll overs. I wound up breaking the stock wheels in the front. The center of the wheel where the nut holds it on the hub(?) broke... completely twisted out of the center of the wheel. I think it was due from rolling the car and applying side stress (many times)... I need a replacement front set of wheels (can't afford CNC).

Are the HPI 5B stock wheels gonna due the same thing as fast?

Car#2
After breaking in and running for about an hour, I put the car away. Came back and the room wreaked of petrol. Car#2 smelled and Car#1 did not. Didn't pay much attention since I overfilled car #2. But when I drove to the bash sight I had about 4 table spoons of petrol in the back of my truck from Car#2 none from car#1; I assume it sloshed (tank was not overfilled at this point) and this too me indicates the fill cap is not sealing, seams like alot of fuel to have come out of the pin hole; also note each car was in it's own box during travel. So I know car#1 did not leak, I switched the caps between the two cars and now car#1 smells of petrol and drips during travel (sloshing fuel)

Should I get with Dan over this issue??
or just get a good cap (don't want to if I don't have too).

the gas caps are vented so unless the tank is empty you will smell fuel.

the hpi rims are alot stronger then the km wheels. i have busted both of my km front rims and have replaced them with hpi

Thanks for the response, I edited the original post to clear up some things. I had a pool of fuel under the car with the questionable gas cap. It's not possible to have as much fuel as I had leak from that pin hole.

Check to see if the rubber inside the cap is still intact and not broken also did you thread the cap on right onto the tank? I have missed threaded the cap once and gas leak from the bottom of the cap. The HPI wheels are a thicker plastic not but much but they are thicker and I have broken the HPI wheels also in the same place that you have spoken off. On my race 5th scales I always use the HPI wheels.

I have several in a room all together and I never smell gas from any of them I think that it has to be another issue.

i get the smell when i leave fuel in them, and keep in mind after your runs there is pressure in the tank so if you shake or rattle around the buggy and the fuel swishes your gonna get some fuel drips out of the vent, another thing to keep in mind the exhaust, i have brought in my bajas after run outside and the exhaust fumes fill the room, you could be smelling that also.

ok maybe my cap is bad as my car always smells like gas in the house
Hopefully not, my wife wouldn't stand for the smell, but check maybe you could get rid of the smell.

Good to know. There is no way my wife will let me keep them in the game room if they continue to smell.
I am going out of town for the weekend, so I left them in my dads shop. He said he would look at them for me; He used to be crew chief for a drag team (semi-pro NOT Pro). So he is an able mechanic. And he is looking at getting a boat, so he wants to know more about the RC hobby in general (that's a plus).

I thought about that but again I can't smell gas at all on the other car. After a run I let them cool down outside, usually for several hours before I put them away.
Even went as far as taping the cars back into the shipping boxes. Went back and open the boxes to have another run the following day and smelled one car but not the other.

TO ALL:

Thanks for the help. When I return (Monday), I will be aggregating the responses and hopefully can provide the "why" to my smelly problem.

i don't get that, you get the smell on one but not the other baja? i get smells from both either fuel or exhaust,
don't know what to make of it then, you should be getting some smells from both,be it fuel or exhaust but you should smell something, never met a r/c gas or nitro powered that you did not smell something beofre or after the runs.
also the proline rims are great i like them better then the hpi

Well I know with mine there is no smell and I have a blood hound that I live with (the wife) and she smells everything and she asthma so she would quickly let me know LOL and she has always said there is not smell and yes I do leave them out after a run I clean them after every run anyway so all the smell and exhaust are gone when I am done cleaning and I take them in but from just sitting there I or she has never smelled gas.

I'll look into the Prolines. I understand there will be "some" smell. But I can't smell my leaf blower, or my weed-eater, or my chainsaw, after they have cooled down. I get that 2stroke smell during use, and while the systems are cooling. But generally I don't smell them in my own shop. I have kept my Nitro in the house and never smelled it after it's cooled down (unless I ran rich and the pipe had nitro in it-but that was a problem and I fixed it).
I dunno, sorta at a loss but I think it's a simple issue. Other than that, these cars are nice. It's very possible my son messed up the seal on his gas cap, he did cross thread it at first and of course if it don't fit, keep twisting!

Yes that cross threading will do it so if you switched it and did not smell it its more then likely just the cap a easy fix.

A little update:
Car#1 - Wheels still broke. ;)

Car#2 - Gas cap is bad. But Since I was gone my dad tore down the car (for no real reason) and took the carb apart and found black dust all in it. He ordered a new in tank fuel filter because he said these from KM were less than desirable. As well as a Walbro carb kit he thinks he was able to match up to the existing carb. So..

WOW!!!!!!!!!! ok did he say what the black dust could be he thinks it is coming from the tank filter?

Not really, he did say he found the same residual dust in car#1 as well, I was having a hell of time getting Car1 tuned but thought I had it, since the plug was brown. But he indicated it was on borrowed time. And yes, he indicated the fuel filter is breaking down, and was not doing anything really so the jets are clogged; the mesh was huge, so it would filter gravel but not much smaller.

For a 23cc stock motor what is a good Walbro to put on it. I have a friend who is a Red Max dealer, and eventually I am getting him to put a Red Max motor on it, then I get a 2 year commercial warranty. But until that time, I would like to put a good carb on it, instead of the KM type. And I have several Walbro laying around but not sure of the ## since I am not at home yet. I have several because people I hang with (mostly IT people) know nothing of 2 stroke. SO I take them chainsaws, weed eaters from them for free and either get them running or scrap them for parts, mostly because it's mindless work that gets me out of the house.

i replaced my filter with the one from the high flow kit i got. was gonna do the 3 hose setup with checkvalve on the one hose, but i couldnt for life of me get that stupid plug in the tank , so resorted to using the old original plug with the brass tube things from high flow kit, and filter, and new larger flow lines.

Yes the goumet can be a bear to get back in the tank I always put 2 stroke oil on the goumet first and alot of twisting and that work for me also its cool that if you have died you gas tank and have taken it out of the water that if you put the goumet in while its still hot it will go in very easy then when the tank cools it will be a tight fit. I have also heard on the forum of guy making a third hole out of the 2 hole goumet and it works well.

i did try the oil on the plug, the reason couldnt get it in was more than likely that i didnt have tank out and was doin it in place, the regualar 2 hole plug i get in again easily the 3 hole having the extra line in it, just doesn't give as much, and with tank still in truck i just didnt have the leverage needed. but i still have all the stuff, so if i need to remove tank later, i can swap over to that system then.
