Hi all, I just got my baja friday and i cant keep it running for the life of me. When i first got it i mixed my fuel 25:1. It ran just fine the first tank just a little rich on the high end. Then today it would start right up and run for a minute or two then it dies and will not re start till its cooled off. I replaced the spark plug with a new NKG plug and still nothing. I re set the H 1 1/2 L 1 1/4 and still will not stay running after it warms up. When its Idling it surges were it revs up a little then back down. Whats wrong with my baja? Please help i am so frustrated right now.

Is your fan clogged or anything? Today I was running my 5t at a friends house and even though it didn't quit running it just starting making next to no power.. I was afraid I had blown it up but I let it set for a minute and realized the pull start was covered in grass and probably wasn't pulling much air. After it cooled it started and ran great.

What's your plug look like? Try a new plug and run it at no more than 1/4 throttle. Pull the plug and it will tell you how you need to adjust the low speed needle. grey-way too lean, fatten LSN, white - really lean, faint brown, sorta lean, dark brow/black - rich. You want a brown paper bag color. Then put a new plug if you have one or just re-install it and do a WOT pass and check the plug again, this will tell you the changes needed for high speed needle.

No dirt or anything, i pulled the shroud off to re gap the coil. The original plug was a little more darker then a paper bag. The new one i put in is tanish color. about to order a new motor my arm hurts from the 3 hours trying to get it to run. could i just have a bad carb?

Something I just thought of is the fuel cap vent could be plugged. If it's plugged as you use fuel a vacumm will form in the tank and make it difficult for you motor to pull fuel from it.. when you let it said it could slowing be letting air in until pressure equalizes.

if its not the fuel cap vent, it may just be a carb issue

so you think this may be the time to move to the 814 or whatever the 8xx carb is? You don't think it could be a busted piston ring? It does have alot of compression just like it did out of the box. I just wonder if its the plastic carb spacer, i have read that its a common problem for them not to be flat and that would explain why the erratic high low idle. will tare the carb off in the morning and will see what i find. Is there anything else i should be on the look out for?

i would take it off and inspect the carb spacer, you might even go with a metal one with teflon gaskets. DDM has them. if you got good compression i don't think you have any problem on that end. have you pulled plug and stuck it in the plug cap and held it to metal of engine someplace and rolled the engine over looking for good spark? if not check that first. then pull the carb and inspect. one way alot of guys say to check, is when you get it running spray wd40 around all the gasket connections on carb and the iso block see if its sucking in air, then you know ya got a leak. a air leak will definately cause running issues

Ended up being the fuel cap. I just removed the rubber vent put it back in and ran it for 30 min no peoblems at all. I feel stupid. My grandfather and i use to run a lawn care bussnies and any time we had a problem with the blowers or weed wackers it was either the fuel cap vent or the pump in the carb. What carb kit works with the km carb just so i can get one ordered?

whats the point of the carb kit? is it a jet kit or just a rebuild kit?

Its a rebuild kit. Us in the parts of the usa that have no choice to run 10% ethanol in our pump gas will need pump replacements faster due to the use of the ethanol in all of our pump gas.

Now my question is, would using the alcohol carb kit and just use the seals help with the ethanol eating the pump and seals?
