I finally broke down and bought a king motor baja for a 1/5 scale project I've been dreaming up for a few years. its a 30.5cc 2 bolt ksrc-002 nylon edition. The buggy is still a few days out, but I'm already shopping for a sand rail style cage for it. Any suggestions? I'm rather fond of the orange powder-coated cage that rovan rc sells but so far i am open to other suggestions. Also I am searching for a scale looking all terrain tire. I have some time to make my decision on those parts, since I still need to actually receive the buggy, tear it down, dye the white nylon parts, check the shocks and diff, re-assemble... the fun stuff. This is my first large scale rc, any suggestions for things i need to look for or look at while it is apart would be a great help as well.

I had bought the king motor 001 roller,, already had a slightly modified 30.5 2 bolt from my redcat, go thru shocks,, take out what ever oil is in there, replace with some good stuff,,, go thru diff,, plenty of good vids on you tube on what to look for,, I think it was phatdad ones that had great tips on rebuilding them,,, I upgraded all the bearings to fast eddy,, got the cheaper 40 dollar set, been great,, replaces every bearing in buggy and in diff,,,, better servos for sure,, u will need the hpi radio box,, unless u can find just a hpi steering servo mount,, aftermarket servos will not fit the stock steering servo mount, its not rectangular,, its rounded on ends,, im running hitec 5765 for steering and a 7954 for throttle brake,, and get a killer bee kill switch ( a must ), some new beadlocks for the tires,, stock ones are week,,,im running silverback ones,, that's just some simple things to check for,,, oh,, check for Loctite too for bolts that go into metal,,,, and make sure all bolts are tight,,,,,, ive modded mine so much now,, there is no going back,,, the aftermarket is so tempting,,, so it can get pricey fast,, if u break something, upgrade it,,, u can build the car strictly from the aftermarket,,, you can upgrade to proline trenchers for the 5t,, great tires,, look great,, but are bigger than the stock 5b tires,,,, the buggy has a 20 tooth pinion vs a 19 tooth pinion in the rear gearbox,, the 19 would compensate for bigger tires,, I never had problem running the stock buggy gearing though,,,, get little less low end,, will still spin them pretty easy,, but will be slightly faster,,,,

Thanks! The kill switch was a given, already have a RamTech here and waiting. It was an lhs leftover from a past employee with a serious passion for 5b's. They may have a few other odds n ends around as well. As this isn't really intended to be a racer or a hard-core basher, do you have a recommendation for shock oil wt.? Being new to this scale, I'm not exactly sure where to start. I know all too well that things get pricey. Been messing with nitros and electrics for about 7 years now and I know all too well how tempting the aftermarket gets. I'm all too familiar with the break it and upgrade it program too. I'm already $600 into this and I didnt even receive the $450 buggy yet... lol. I was unaware of the beadlocks being weak. I have done a fair amount of reading up and figured the servos wouldnt last too long. I've heard that the carbs aren't that great either. Hoping my lhs still has one stashed somewhere. I have some of the last rc4wd dune reapers on the way, I think they will go with the look i am after, and I'm hoping for decent performance and durability. I've had great luck with their products before.

Well, to update, the project is not making much progress. Still waiting on some parts to show up, and had an issue with the buggy on arrival. Apparently the rear hub assemblies did not care for the near 0 temps and ups's rough handling. A very special thanks to kingmotorrc.com for being very helpful and understanding, and getting replacement parts in the mail the next day. I will post pics and such as things start making progress. I decided to go with a black powder coated rovan cage, and silverback rc 5imian wheels. I'm a sucker for old aluminum slots, and when i saw them, I just couldn't resist. I know that limits me to 5b/5t front tire sizes, but rims are easy to swap should i feel the need for more rubber.
