Layshaft gear won't mesh correctly

For some reason my 14 tooth Duratrax layshaft gear and pinion gear won't mesh. I even changed back to the stock the gear and get the same thing. I've ran the Duratrax 14 tooth for about a year with no issues and until a friend stripped my spur gear and I changed it is when I started having the problem. I've had the motor out plenty of times before and had no issues. Is there an adjustment i'm missing to get the pinion and layshaft closer? Thanks.
