under what circumstances is this is a good idea? or is it really never?

would you be better locking the front, rear, or both?

Well if your going rock crawling all three locked up would be great but apart from that there not much cop.
My MCD rally was locked and it was a pain to handle.

I don't know, a lot of the guys on MCD racing forum run the LSD's front and rear and they despite being expensive do improve the handling but you can get away with just changing the front. Apparently LSD's make the car go into and out of corners carrying more speed. My V4 has standard diffs but it's alreadyan accomplished handler.
