Howdy!



I'm looking to depart from 1/10 nitro and graduate to 1/5th scale trucks.



Mostly I intend to rebuild one with bug bore shocks, stronger chassis, stronger A-Arms and a beefier set of Heavy duty driveshaft's; to name a few.



The part im stuck on, is what to do about the truck.



A new HPI is 1,200, a KM clone is half.



If in going to tear it up from the floor up should I just pocket the savings and go with the clone as a "roller"? Cost isn't really an issue as im a single soldier, but lets face it; savings are savings.



I'd like to support the original company, but its a lot to just replace most of it with parts for racing/bashing.



What do you guys think? Would looking for a steal on a kit be better? Just looking for some advice from those that have been around 5th scales longer.

first question to ask, do u plan on racing at a national level?? if so get a hpi Baja,, they don't allow clones,, and some forums don't like them either,, lots of hate there,, anyway, if not worried about that,,, get a roller from km,, I did,, for 330 bucks,, u gonna replace engine and electrics anyway,, might as well just get what u want to make reliable,, tear car down, go thru it,, tighten bolts fluids etc,, upgrade bearings and beadlocks add a killer rc superbee kill switch and go drive,, I started with a 001 roller for 330 bucks,, year or so later, mostly hpi or aftermarket now and is now a hpi Baja 5t technically,, can put the km 001 back together with the parts I took off,, I haven't totaled what I have so far in mine, but im sure im over a 2 grand by now,,, just bought a new 0br 30.5 prostock for it,, ,you can find a nice stock 4 bolt Zenoah g290rc for under 200 bucks when on sale, get a pipe,, servos and mounting items may run 200 bucks,, pipe for bit over 200,, or about 160 is average for a pipe,or find a nice used one,,,,40 bucks for bearings , with the upgrades will still be less than a Baja,, or maybe 80 bucks for rpm arms,,,,, or find a km used,, they don't sell as high as hpi used,, one locally here person was trying to sell for 400 bucks with a 4 bolt Zenoah in it,, with some upgrades,,, so ebay maybe a good place to check too or craigslist
 
I don't plan on international, being in the army my schedule is more to do what I can when I can. Mostly just bash racing maybe some organized stuff.



I'm no fan of clones, but if I'm going to tear it up I may as well save and go ahead and buy the parts I was going to anyway, servos, engine, pipe etc. And since id tear it up it wouldn't really be a HPI or a clone lol.



Mostly in just trying to look at cost and create a budget.
