I have lost my second big gear in less than two weeks. The large ring gear has chipped a tooth. Any ideas why this is happening? I just run in grass so I don't think it is a rock. Do I need to replace both gears instead of just the big one?

You shouldn't need to replace both gears just the one that has been chipped. Bust teeth really occur when you suck a piece of stone/pebble in.It only takes a small piece to do damage the teeth even though they are pretty tough! The right piece, the right size, the right time and,Bingo!knackered spur! There is an alterative, when you jump and land full throttle, thats another good'un for disaster.
Well, hope it helps a little and good luck.

This is not the spur. I would call it the ring gear. The one on the diff. This was a brand new gear. Lasted less than half a tank.

Wow, I have never had the issue and I run in all sorts of gravel and dirt pipes.

Have you looked in the gear protector on the bottom of the chassis to see if a rock got jammed in there? Have you looked to make sure your diff cannot move back and forth allowing the gear to hit the chassis at the protector?

As long as the gear has not taken its toll on the other you should be ok replacing just one.:)

Well the ring gear is fixed to the diff and if you had the engine lined up pissed then it would wear at an angle and you would notice this on the teeth. I have the lightweight gear on my diff (thinner than stock) and never broken a tooth. I think it's really luck of the draw.

im faily new to fg mts only done around 13 tanks on mine, but when putting the engine in i noticed you could have the engine to far forward the gears would mesh straight but the gears would only be touching on the edge, so this might cause then to break, as i said im still new to fg mt,s so im just putting it out there

Another great point. You could be running them crooked.

its one thing i notice when i first got my mt i pulled the g260rc out and put in a g270rc, i though wow thats silly how you can move the engine then i thought na its good as you can change the gearing

ive noticed with the alloy engine mounts and alloy rear end the gears line up and you can get the mesh spot on, befor with the plastic it was good but now i feel its better

New gears installed, mesh set at best guess with the paper trick like nitro spurs. Almost a tank and no broken gears. The motor was way too far forward.
If you buy a new FG RTR it would be a good idea to check it over before running.
