i just got a new set of mt v3 wheels and man are they huge this the first time i seen the mt wheels in person, I always wanted to put chains on my rampage so i went down and got some chain that looked realistic and to scale, im still working on them i only have one front done and halfway thru making the other front one it it took me all night just to do one tire! the links tend to break when i open them up to connect them i left one link/side open so i can use the metal zipties to connect the chains to the wheels that way i can clip the ziptie and take them off anytime i want i uploaded a few pictures of my progress i'll posts more as i finish, thanks and hope you guys like them just a few questions ?? do you think this will weight the rampage down too much?? or cause too much strain on the driveline or maybe burn my steering servo out??? either way i can easily remove or connect them ?

I think they look wicked! :D

Just a thought...maybe just put them on the rear? Does anyone think that that would be less of a stress on the driveline? Hmmm...

I love the idea though!!!

How about studding the tires?? It would be a more permanent thing but if they where only going to be used in certain situations then it might be a good thing. Might even be a bit lighter in weight?

anyway ya go, either one would look cool and should perform well as long as it doesn't wear on the driveline.

He's already working on that on another set...

Chevy, The Bowtie chain would be lighter...but if you stick with what you have I would remove a few rows of chain...

If you look back at my Flux pics, I only needed like 8 rows...remember most of the time the tires are flying, unlike 1:1 chains that are normally only used at slower speeds...just space less rows a little farther apart.

I bet that one set you made adds 3-5 lbs...better use stock clutch spring even with less rows...

What did you weigh it with?

I weighed mine on a bathroom scale (person with car, person without car)

With gas, lid, tires, battery a stock MT regular clocks in at 34 lbs!

With those chains yours is pushing 40 for sure  ..

grizzle i put the chains on the back only because of the weight and $$$

i weighted it the same as you did digital scale i don't think its too accurate tho.

GUys, yours chains look awesome! I bought some dog leashes at the dollar store with plans to do this. I figure after reading I'll just put them on the back. Has anyone had a chance to try them out? Maybe shoot a video and upload it? ;)

I never thought about 99 cent dog chains good idea heavy, i used chain that was a dollar a foot, haha, I finished making both rear sets but I havnt tested them yet I been meaning to try them, I'll try to get some video this weekend of them.

i'm curious to hear how those sound at high speed, been watchin ice road truckers, thinkin it should be close to that sound, lol.

I think these are going to work really, really well!

I still havnt ran them im not sure I will, the chain seems to want to pinch and poke into the rubber sidewall of the tire causing them to have small cuts and holes anyone else have that problem?

I know this thread died a while back, but wanted to post if you are still playing with them or others as I’ve done it on some projects.

The chain that follows the side wall on trucks and acts as the connector for the lateral chains should not be up on the side wall. The diameter of this radial chain is, and should be smaller than the diameter of the rim, which moves the connector points off the sidewall into free air space. You then use bungee cord stretched out to near max (for toy projects), or on a real truck a more heavy duty non metal connect in a cross / X pattern to center and provide tension. On the back side you place the connectors for tension parallel to each other clear of the axel, like | |.

The issue with this over a truck is with CVD / dog bones on independent suspension, the area of the inner wheel well needs to be clear for A arm travel and such, there's all kinds of clearance problems. On a real truck the relative position of the axel to rim will be fixed.

An alternative to your rubbing issue is to buy that rubber you open in a can and dip tools / plier handles in to repair / replace the grips. Could dip the radial chains in that to coat them, and then cut out were you hook up your lateral chains.
