Started my MT for the 3rd tank of fuel. Noticed the idle increased after startup so i i richened a bit turning low needle counterclockwise. Idle improved a bit. Was 2 minutes on the tank when the truck lost power and and engine shut down. Tried starting it but without success. I noticed the spark plug was a bit loose. Checked it to be sure current was going thru the plug which was o.k, put the plug back on and tried starting again. Still no success.

In the process, i lost the settings for the low spped needle. Do you think the spark plug is bad or i need to readjust the LS needle to factory settings? How do i reset or what can i do to get the truck starting again?

Just turn the needle all the way in till it stops. Just be sure not to over tighten or force the needle more than it wants to go. Then back it out one and one quarter turns for LS needle, and one and one half turns for HS needle.

Thanks Kun144. Will do that. I think the engine was a bit over lean before it lost power. How do i determine if the spark plug is the problem? Shouldnt the engine still start up even on a messed up needle settings?

Here's a nice plug chart from HBF. Not sure if it will work since it's from a different site.

Also, hope I'm not breaking any rules.

It would probably run no matter how out of adjustment you get the HS needle, but I think the LS needle is a bit more sensitive. You should only have to adjust the LS needle very little if any at all. I'm not sure, but settings may vary for you since you are in a much hotter climate than what I am In. I recommend running it a little rich until you get a good feeling on how to tune the engine.

I understand your pain. Mine ran fine until I installed this headkit I got in a trade. I have checked and flipped the piston, set the magneto gap, good spark, plug is wet, reset carb to specs nada. tomorrow I am putting the stock parts back to prove my brain cels haven't totally been fried... I've done kits before... compression is suspect.... wondering if the ring isn't bad... still should fire. even pulled the carb apart and swapped fuel lines.... busted my pull start string I have tried so many things, repaired it (it is shorter now)... the person I got it from got the kit and his baja from another guy.... and he never mentioned the cracked case or missing flywheel fins either .... maybe a used ring would cause this? I dunno. I am clutching at straws at this point... the speculation stuff before I rip the motor out tomorrow.... got a couple to strip this week... at least I can finally go play with my FG Semi...it's been a very long project.

"maybe a used ring would cause this?"

is this the used (piston) ring ? that will do it there

Probably ran it to lean. My MT with the 28.5cc had to be rebuilt. :( The motor with only a few tanks through it. Rob and I were at Dog park when the MT ran ok but not to its full potential. And then it died and Rob and I tried to start it after adjusting the needles with no success. We pulled and pulled but come to find out after tearing the motor apart. FRIED. Bottom line don’t run them to lean. I replaced the top end and learned a valuable lesson. Runs sweet now.

How do I replace the top end? What are the parts i need? I'm running a CY28cc engine on my MT.

Well I finally took that headkit off. I had changed my carb settings, busted and repaired a pull start string, cursed, stomped my feet, then left the buggy in the garage and finished my FG project... I put the stock stuff back on and it fired second pull.... at least the guy I traded with finally agreed to work something out and take this head kit back... I bought a Firehammer with a 26cc race port. and I will probably swap motors with the Redcat. Man alive was that a PITA... it was supposed to be all new parts so I can only guess why it wouldn't fire up, but the compression wasn't very good for new stuff.
