why is the gear box all cut up?

I hit a pole and it's a big crack and some of the plastic broke off and I can't get this thing part for the life of me so I was Gonna try cutting the plastic part to get it. Anyway do I heat the part up and pull it apart. If some could help me that would be awesome!

mine came apart easily removing the grub screw in the side and pulling out the pinion gear

i did it had to use heat! ( :

It may have been damaged on the hit.

Take the set screw out. reach thru the cup with a punch and tap on the end of the gear. It will come out.
