Hi guys :)

im looking for a new diff for my FG MB Pro, at present its the stock diff with a steel cover, but its time for a new diff as i want an adjustable diff.

Ones ive been looking at are:


Whats the best for off-road usage, Adjustable or Self locking :s ?

not sure which to get, my budget is about £100 ($160).

Also with these diffs do they come as standard with reinforced sleeves or do i also need to buy that extra?

Have you tried using different mixes of grease etc. in the diff 1st? No matter which one you buy you will need to replace parts in the internals from time to time depending on how you have it adjusted. Its really all about friction and pressure.
 
ive got a FG viscous adjustable diff in my beast.

ive never adjusted it, ran it like it came but its f*kin brilliant, LSD on any surface. so much better than the stock diffs!
 
and to me difs need to work. the more you lock a dif, especially on a 2wd, the more it will slide out in corners... the outside tire needs to spin faster than the inside tire to keep traction. if the dif is "locked" then they both spin the same speed, which causes one to slide. then the other breaks loose from the rest of the truck pushing laterally against it.
 
Locked diff is nice for straight line dragracing or when slowly climbing obstacles and extremly rough terrain. For turning and highspeed offroading, keep the diff functional i would say.

none of the diffs im looking at are locked, they are both adjustable, except the adjustable diff you adjust manually & it stays in that position & the self locking diff adjusts itself auto, the more spin on the wheels the more lock it has.

But im still unsure which one is best for offroad :( ? im guessing the self locking diff is prob the better one as it adjusts its self to the conditions?

Also will i need diff risers? ive heard using these i will lose about 10mm clearance, is there a way around this :( ?

Yes Pipe I am aware of how a diff works! :lol:

I don't need one for the way I drive, which is aggressive to say the least...

I just figured if the guy was going to drop some coin on a "Locker" here is my version of a locker and it's a WHOLE lot cheaper! It's always good to have options...

In my Beater Blazer I have an ARB air locker and I love it. It's an open diff until I hit the switch and then it locks. Too bad there isn't something like that for the FG's...
 
i belive there is a harm mag diff that has been oddified on the team5hite forums going cheap.

just put lm grease in it, the self locking (or blocking etc) works via a magnetic feild as inside the diffs behind the internal gears there are magnetic rings and inside the center shaft there is a copper coil, as the diff starts spinning internally it generates a magnetic feild (much like turning a old brushed leccy motor with magnets in it)

it also changes the feild stregnth based on rpm on the outer case as well as the internal gears rpm, as far as im aware ts probably the best diff going and people that have them rave about them
 
i read somewhere that with a self locking diff i can remove the sleeve & replace with just a steel sleeve as there is no need for the extra rim that goes around, the grub screws on self locking diffs arent used & recommended that they be lock tighted, apparantly it says so in the manual for the diff! The only reason why FG self locking diffs come with this sleeve as its cheaper for FG so they don't have make 2 different types of sleeves for self locking & adjustable diffs, they just use the same sleeve for both.

ive got a 4 clutch fg diff in my touring car. the adjustment screws are in fact in the raised part of the diff sleeve, its needed to adjust the diff. without it you may as well have a standard diff
 
aye thats what i mean, but a "self locking" diff works different to an adjustable diff, you don't adjust a self locking diff, only during the build using plates or summit for the stiffness, but after its put together theres no adjustments. Thats what i read anyway as people have used the standard steel sleeve for self locking diffs as its stronger?
